It has been a while since the galaxy far, far away has been in the movie scene as it introduced the Mandoverse on Disney Plus but it never turned its back on its roots as Lucasfilm already announced some films coming in the way of the franchise. Every now and then, Lucasfilm announces movies during the Star Wars Celebration each year or even out of the blue which they have in their plans and so far, most of it are still under development or in the pre-production stage. Either way, it is a huge win for every Star Wars fan as the franchise ups the game in both movies and series on Disney Plus.
Here are the Star Wars movies that are confirmed, so far.
1 The Mandalorian & Grogu
The first one on the list is what Lucasfilm calls as the first of their return in the movie scene with their latest movie announced through the official Star Wars website, The Mandalorian & Grogu, which marks the huge jump of the titular characters, Din Djarin and Din Grogu, from the Disney Plus series to the big screens. Jon Favreau, being the creator of The Mandalorian, will helm the movie. The movie has no release date yet but it was announced that it will be the first movie to come out for the franchise. In the official announcement, Favreau excitingly said:
2 Daisy Ridley's New Jedi Order Movie
Recently, there has been a lot of talks about the upcoming Daisy Ridley Star Wars movie because of the rumors about its delay which was already debunked by Lucasfilm with an assurance that the movie is still ongoing, and of the criticisms on the comments of the director of the movie, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who said that it is about time that Star Wars gets a woman to shape the story. Thankfully, all these are ironed out and while there is still no official title, the movie is being called as the New Jedi Order movie because the film will be focusing on Rey Skywalker's promise to Luke that she would rebuild the Jedi Order after it fell. The movie was announced during the Star Wars Celebration 2023 and it is to be set 15 years after the sequel trilogy's The Rise of Skywalker but it has no release date yet.
3 Dave Filoni's The Mandalorian Film
The protégé of George Lucas, Dave Filoni, recently went up the ranks of Lucasfilm where he was recently promoted as the Chief Creative Officer of the studio. Filoni is known to have worked with Jon Favreau in The Mandalorian series and created the Ahsoka series. With this comes his The Mandalorian movie which will bring the titular character teaming up with Ahsoka Tano in a feature film that will have Grand Admiral Thrawn as the villain of the movie. Filoni ensured that this film will not be a replay of the usual rivalry between the New Republic and the Empire. Also, The Mandalorian Season 4 remains underway, and this movie is not the same as Jon Favreau's The Mandalorian & Grogu, thus, it only means more exposure for Din Djarin in the galaxy far, far away. There is no release date yet for the film.
4 James Mangold's Dawn of the Jedi Movie
During the Star Wars Celebration 2023, it was announced that James Mangold will write and direct an upcoming film in the galaxy far, far away which will be way before almost every release of Lucasfilm. The film of James Mangold is to be set in an era called as the "Dawn of the Jedi" which is more or less around 25,000 years ago before the sequel trilogy, thus, the current nickname of the upcoming movie while there is still no official title yet. When it was announced, Mangold teased that it will be "a kind of origin story of how the Force came to be known.” The movie has no release date yet.
5 Lando
Solo: A Star Wars Story introduced Donald Glover, also known as Childish Gambino, as Lando Calrissian who stole a scene in the movie and from then became one of the favorites of the fans of the galaxy far, far away. Thus, he landed a Star Wars project titled Lando which was initially announced four years ago as a series, but was later changed as a movie where Donald Glover is said to be working on the project with his brother, Stephen Glover. However, details and updates on the movie remain scarce but it is still under development.
6 Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film
The director of Deadpool and Stranger Things is making his jump to the galaxy far, far away to explore another universe in his career as he was tapped by the franchise to helm a Star Wars movie. The movie remains untitled and there are not much information on the movie that Shawn Levy will direct but in a recent interview with Collider, Levy revealed that the status of his film with Lucasfilm is still on hold. He said, "We were just starting the process of developing my movie, and the writer strike happened. So we are in that holding pattern that so much of our industry is in." Still, it is not totally canceled yet, thus, it is considered as "under development."
7 Star Wars Trilogy of Rian Johnson
Rian Johnson had already proven himself to Lucasfilm with how he handled Star Wars: The Last Jedi and in November 2017, the franchise announced that Rian Johnson will be having his own Star Wars trilogy beyond The Skywalker saga. The Knives Out director has been asked repeatedly whether his trilogy has been canceled but he always makes room to debunk the rumors. Variety previously asked Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy regarding the status of Rian Johnson's trilogy and she reiterated that the film remains on their table and that they are taking their time while the director is still busy with other projects.
8 Taika Waititi's Star Wars Film
Last but definitely not the least is the untitled Star Wars movie of Taika Waititi. The Thor: Ragnarok and Love and Thunder director may have already left the direction of the upcoming Thor 5 movie to someone else but he is making the jump to direct a movie in the galaxy far, far awaywhich he is not rushing to create. Waititi spoke to ETOnline with an update on his Star Wars film and he said:
With his background in the franchise, Taika Waititi has been with Star Wars through directing an episode of The Mandalorian and voicing IG-11. Waititi's Star Wars movie remains under development.
As Lucasfilm goes back to its roots with the movies, that does not mean that the franchise will do away with the Disney Plus series they have built for half a decade. Lucasfilm has lined up a lot of shows on Disney Plus as well which may coincide with the movies in the galaxy far, far away, further expanding the narrative into how huge the universe can offer.
