The popular Kingsman director Matthew Vaughn is all in for a complete Star Wars reboot from scratch, but he claims that the fan community might not agree with this idea. Regardless of that, he often thinks about why Star Wars is not getting rebooted, when other significant franchises, including superhero movies and James Bond, have been rebooted multiple times in the past without impacting the IP’s popularity.

During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Vaughn discussed the current state of the Star Wars franchise. When asked whether it would be difficult to reject an offer to direct a Star Wars movie, the X-Men: First Class director said, “Now, not so much.” He went on to explain that reintroducing the popular and beloved characters from the franchise is much more interesting.

This means that he would do a reboot with the brand-new reincarnations of some beloved characters such as Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. Vaughn also said, "Why not [reboot]? Bond, do you mind Bond? I mean, you asked me who's going to play the next Wolverine. Why are these [Star Wars] characters so hallowed that from '77, you can't redo it for a new audience?" You can watch the video below:

What went wrong with Star Wars?

Vaughn continues to share how the Skywalker family is in the middle of the entire Star Wars franchise. This suggests that shifting from these characters is one of the ways in which the franchise went wrong. He said, "Star Wars is the Skywalker family, and that's where I think they've gone wrong. They've done brilliantly in the TV [shows on Disney+], but it needs an epic new film, and that's what I would do."

The filmmaker also shared that he’s not scared of the backlash he might face from the community for rebooting Star Wars, claiming that he’s up for the challenge and can make it work. Vaughn said, "Everyone's going to go batsh*t crazy, but let's bring it on, because if you want a new generation, make the movie for them. The old generation can hopefully make it well enough that they go, 'Okay, I'm enjoying it.'"
