There is always a first for everything and for Marvel Studios, Echo will be making its mark as the very first R-rated series for the franchise. The show will be exploring the story of Maya Lopez, also known as the titular character, who was first introduced in Hawkeye. As she begins her own journey in the MCU, critics' first reactions are in support of the upcoming series and they say it is "incredible and violent."

Alaqua Cox is making her own name in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, in her very own series coming this January 10, 2024 on Disney+ and it will be the first time that the MCU will have an R-rated show in a streaming platform whose brand is more leaned on the kid-friendly side of television. More than that, Disney is trying out a new release scheme as all episodes will release in one day which means that one can binge watch it straight until the end. There were critics that were fortunate enough to see the early episodes of Echo and praises are coming in for the series. Here are some of the critics' reactions:

The inclusion of Alaqua Cox in the MCU proves Marvel's promise of inclusivity and representation and she is one of the first deaf characters in the MCU, alongside Lauren Ridloff who plays Makkari in Eternals. The use of sign language in the MCU shows how the MCU stays true to their promise of bringing in inclusivity. More than that, Alaqua Cox is an amputee but her action scenes show that, indeed, there are no limits for anyone who believes in themselves.

What is Echo all about?

Echo will reintroduce the titular character who also goes by the name of Maya Lopez. Her origins will be the focal point of the series and it will revisit how she got her ruthless behavior which connects her to one the biggest crime lords in New York City, Kingpin. As Maya goes back to her hometown, she will have to face her past and connect to her Native American roots while dealing with her present so that she could finally move forward. The series is also expected to be the bridge to lead into Daredevil: Born Again.
