Echo Disney Plus Series Will Be Released Under "Marvel Spotlight" Banner

The brand-new Marvel Spotlight banner will "bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen".

Marvel Studios released the first trailer for Echo on Friday, showcasing the upcoming Disney+ series set within the MCU. The live-action Marvel series will air simultaneously on Disney+ and Hulu, and it will be the franchise's first TV-MA show, but that's not all. Apparently, Echo will kick off a brand-new banner.

In a recent article released on Marvel's official website, the studio revealed that Echo is in the inaugural title under the "Marvel Spotlight" banner. Marvel Spotlight will be used on titles that feature more grounded, character-driven stories, which don't require as much prior knowledge of the MCU. The name of the brand-new label originates from a Marvel Comics anthology series called Marvel Spotlight, which ran across the 1970s and 1980s and introduced many Marvel characters.

"Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on street-level stakes over larger MCU continuity," Head of Streaming Brad Winderbaum said. "Just like comics fans didn't need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn't need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what's happening in Maya's story."

What is Marvel's Echo about?

Echo features the origin story of Maya Lopez (played by Alaqua Cox), whose ruthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her hometown. In the series, she must confront her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and embrace the meaning of community and family if she ever hopes to move forward.

"You will see, once she leaves New York, she's faced with some issues," Cox revealed in an interview on Marvel's Instagram account last year. "So she goes to Oklahoma, where she originally lives. She will try to find the definition of family and community and what it means to her, because she's been alone for so long. So she wants to try to get back involved with her family, and connect with her Indigenous roots as well."

Executive-producing the series are Kevin Feige, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Louis D'Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Richie Palmer, Marion Dayre, and Jason Gavin. The co-executive producers are Amy Rardin, Christina King (Seminole), Sydney Freeland, and Jennifer Booth. Sydney Freeland and Catriona McKenzie are directing the series.
