VisionQuest Trailer Quietly Reveals Paul Bettany Is Playing a Second Marvel Icon

Vision was never the first of his kind — new VisionQuest footage ties Paul Bettany to a Marvel android who debuted in 1939.

Marvel's latest VisionQuest trailer footage holds a surprise Marvel Studios never announced: Paul Bettany is not only playing Vision in the series. The new footage shows Bettany wreathed in flame as Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch — Marvel's first android superhero, now appearing in live action as a second role for the actor.

Marvel released the footage in a new spot for the series, and the flaming figure is hard to miss. A brief montage connects Hammond to Vision himself, leaning into a piece of Marvel lore the MCU has never touched on screen before: the two androids share a creator's lineage.

The Marvel Legend Hiding in the VisionQuest Trailer

Jim Hammond predates almost everything in the Marvel Universe. Marvel's own character history lays out who he is:

  • Created in 1939: Hammond is an android built by Professor Phineas Horton, able to burst into flame and fly

  • A hero of the 1940s: He joined the New York police under the name Jim Hammond and fought through the Second World War era

  • The first Human Torch: Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four later took the Human Torch name in homage to Hammond

  • Vision's "brother": Marvel counts Vision among Hammond's family — both androids trace back to Horton's work

Folding Hammond into VisionQuest gives the series a direct line to Marvel's Golden Age, and it reframes Vision's story as the second chapter of an android legacy that began in 1939.

A Quiet MCU Record for Paul Bettany

The dual role also gives Bettany a distinction no announcement ever mentioned. Counting his voice work, he now stands alone at the top of one particular MCU list:

  • J.A.R.V.I.S.: Bettany voiced Tony Stark's AI beginning with Iron Man in 2008

  • Vision: He stepped on screen as the synthezoid Avenger in Avengers: Age of Ultron in 2015

  • Jim Hammond: The VisionQuest footage adds a third distinct Marvel character

That is three MCU roles for Bettany — one more than Robert Downey Jr., who pairs Tony Stark with Victor von Doom in December's Avengers: Doomsday. Marvel has issued no press release about the Hammond casting; the reveal lives entirely in the footage.

Where VisionQuest Stands Now

VisionQuest is the final installment of the trilogy that began with WandaVision and continued with Agatha All Along, with Terry Matalas serving as showrunner. The series premiered October 14 on Disney+ with its first two episodes, with new episodes following on Tuesdays.

Alongside Bettany, the cast includes James Spader returning as Ultron, Ruaridh Mollica as Thomas Shepherd, Todd Stashwick, T'Nia Miller, Lauren Morais and Orla Brady. With Hammond now in the mix, Vision's search for his memories and identity has a much older mirror to reckon with — the android who came before him.
