Rockstar Games finally released the first trailer for the highly-anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI in early December 2023, giving us our first look at the story centered on Lucia and Jason, the Bonnie and Clyde-inspired duo protagonists and the gorgeous visuals of the game's world. While Rockstar hasn't officially revealed GTA 6's map, various leaks have sparked speculation on how the game's open-world will look like, and with the first trailer already out, we now know what locations to expect, but what else about GTA 6's world haven't been revealed?

Here's everything we know about GTA 6's map based on what Rockstar revealed so far and the unofficial leaks:

Where will GTA 6 take place?

Over the years, Grand Theft Auto games have been to different fictional places inspired by real locations across the United States such as Vice City (Miami), Los Santos (Los Angeles), San Andreas (San Francisco), and Liberty City (New York City). Bloomberg previously revealed that the next generation experience that GTA 6 will bring would be set in a "fictional version of Miami." This may go full circle with Grand Theft Auto: Vice City released in 2002 which is set in 1986.

A major leak in September 2022 from the breach of Rockstar Games' server showed that Grand Theft Auto 6 would be in a new Miami-inspired location which Rockstar Games confirmed to be legitimate. This could be a modern Vice City. There were also rumors that the game will also take place in the state of Georgia, but that hasn't been confirmed yet.

On December 4, 2023, Rockstar released the first trailer for GTA 6, confirming that the next installment will take place in the state of Leonida, Rockstar's version of Florida, with Vice City (Miami) as one of the main areas of the map.

Rockstar provided an official description for GTA 6, which reads:

Grand Theft Auto VI heads to the state of Leonida, home to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City and beyond in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the Grand Theft Auto series yet.

At this point, it's still unclear if GTA 6's Leonida will based entirely based on the whole state of Florida, but the various shots from the first trailer confirms that it will not just be Vice City. There are also shots of what appears to be based on Florida's swampy Everglades:

The screenshot from the trailer confirms Vice City/ Leonida Keys in the GTA 6 map, and it also confirms the VCI Airport, and another part of Leonida: Kelly County.

It's probably going to take a while before Rockstar releases the second trailer for GTA 6, so for now, we'll just have to rewatch the first trailer to appreciate the incredible details of Leonida:

How big is the potential size of the GTA 6 map?

User KeWiS on the GTAForums did a study on the size of the different worlds from the previous GTA games. The sizes are as follows:

  • Grand Theft Auto III - 4.38 square kilometers

  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - 5.62 square kilometers

  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - 31.55 square kilometers

  • Grand Theft Auto IV - 8.06 square kilometers

  • Grand Theft Auto V - 48.15 square kilometers

The size of the map for GTA 6 is expected to be 10 times larger the size of the last game following the trend, thus, this would allow the players to explore a bigger Miami-inspired city. As per the map of GTA 6, @GTAVInewz on X (formerly Twitter) shared a leak that the game will have an "ever-evolving map" which means that there would be new cities coming out from time to time. However, none of these details have been officially confirmed.

Here's the latest version of the unofficial mapping project by DuPz0r (based on what's revealed in the first trailer and leaked evidence):

According to the latest update from Dupz0r's mapping project, it looks like GTA 6's map will be bigger than GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTA 4, and GTA 5 maps combined, featuring several cities and more interiors than previous Grand Theft Auto games. You can check out the website of the mapping project here.
