Ryan Reynolds has much to be proud of in his latest movie, Deadpool & Wolverine. Aside from leading the threequel, he also co-wrote and co-produced the film. He also brought back Hugh Jackman to reprise his role as the iconic adamantium-clawed mutant after his supposed retirement following the release of James Mangold’s 2017 Logan. Not only that, but the threequel has also surpassed the $1-billion mark at the global box office. However, among this series of successes, Reynolds shares yet another of his “proudest” — and absolutely hilarious — Marvel achievements.
In a post on X, Reynolds discusses his greatest achievement in Deadpool & Wolverine. And no, it has nothing to do with the cameos, the stars, or the moments in the film but rather with the way he names the Inter-Dimensional Portal, a mystical wormhole that creates a gateway between two locations. Deadpool calls it a “Marvel Sparkle Circle,” as the actor himself didn’t know what it was called when they were writing the movie.
“At one point, Deadpool calls the portal a ‘Marvel Sparkle Circle.’ Mostly because while we were writing, I didn’t know what it was actually called,” he explained.
Since then, even people at Marvel have started calling it a “Marvel Sparkle Circle,” seemingly making it part of the canon. Though he found it amusing, it was still his proudest achievement in making the third Deadpool movie.
“One of my favourite parts of this whole experience is hearing folks at Marvel call it a ‘Marvel Sparkle Circle’ as well. As though it’s canon,” he continued. “Sad as it may be, I think it’s my proudest achievement.”
Shawn Levy Prioritizes Legacy Over Cameos in Deadpool & Wolverine
True enough, Deadpool & Wolverine features several cameos, from Henry Cavill’s “Cavillrine” to Hulk. However, a few characters don’t just make brief appearances but play supporting roles. With Wesley Snipes’ Blade, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra, Dafne Keen’s X-23, and Chris Evans’ Johnny Storm / Human Torch appearing, director Shawn Levy told The Official Marvel Podcast that they focused on “legacy” by featuring these characters, as none of them received a proper ending.
“The vibe on set was a party. We wanted to play with this theme of 'legacy.' So, we started thinking of characters we knew who never quite got their ending,” he said. “When we had all these characters together and you have X-23, and you have Blade, and you have Gambit and Electra. Everyone was so happy and grateful.”
In the case of Channing Tatum’s Gambit, the actor finally debuted as the X-Man character after failing to be part of Brett Ratner’s 2006 X-Men: The Last Stand and Gavin Hood’s 2009 X-Men Origins: Wolverine. His planned standalone Gambit movie was canceled following the Disney-Fox merger in 2019. For Levy, Deadpool & Wolverine was the “moment” the Magic Mike star had been waiting for.
“Everyone was so grateful and happy to be there,” he continued. “So we got the work done, and we had a lot of fun.”
With the film’s success, Levy couldn’t help but feel privileged to have worked on Deadpool & Wolverine. Despite the many projects he has undertaken, he revealed this one is something he will never forget.
As Deadpool is known for being a relentlessly wisecracking and ever-quipping mercenary, it’s no surprise that the Merc with a Mouth makes humorous suggestions in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now that he’s officially a part of the MCU, there will surely be more to come.
