Netflix has officially announced the main cast of Outback. The streamer confirmed that Ryu Jun-yeol, Jung Ho-yeon, Hong Kyung, Won Ji-an, and Justin Min will lead the new mystery thriller series, which is currently using Outback as a working title.
The project adapts the webtoon G’Day into a mystery thriller built around a sudden family loss. After word reaches him that his older sister has died, Shi On leaves for Australia and begins piecing together the trail she left in a city he barely knows, only to find the official story of her death does not add up.
Shi On (Hong Kyung) is the brother who lands in Australia still reeling from that news and grows more doubtful with every remnant of her life he uncovers. Hong Kyung, previously praised for finely drawn performances in Weak Hero Class 1 and the film Hear Me: Our Summer, will drive the search that pulls the rest of the ensemble into view.
Min Hyuk (Ryu Jun-yeol) is the opaque presence around whom the case seems to orbit. The drama withholds how he knew Shi On’s sister and what part he played in the events that followed, turning those unanswered links into the story’s central pressure.
Smiley (Jung Ho-yeon) is a live-streaming creator based in Australia whose next move is almost never obvious, giving the investigation an unpredictable local variable. Shi Young (Won Ji-an) is the older sister whose death is the spark that brings Shi On overseas, and Scott (Justin Min) is a Korean heritage police officer who crosses paths with the others after earlier work in The Umbrella Academy, Beef, and After Yang.
Han Jun-hee, the director of D.P. and the creator of the Weak Hero series, is attached as executive producer. Jeon Doo-kwan, who assisted on D.P. 2 before directing Scene: Strange Stories, will call the shots on set.
Han Jun-hee is also co-writing the scripts with Park Hyun-woo, the writer of Weak Hero Class 2. The pair are rebuilding the characters’ histories and widening the supporting world around the webtoon, with Han Jun-hee saying the series will linger on how anxious young people fracture and change as the truth closes in.
Netflix has yet to announce the official release date of Outback. For now the streamer has only locked the Australia-set working title, the five-person ensemble, and the D.P. and Weak Hero producing team, with a premiere window still unlisted.
