We've seen scary things in Star Wars before, like Sarlacc Pits, Rancors, and Palpatine's dark presence. Now, it sounds like Disney and Lucasfilm's popular science fantasy franchise is about to get a lot scarier. At a recent Andor Season 2 event in London, showrunner Tony Gilroy mentioned a Star Wars horror project that could potentially be in the works.
In an interview with SFX Magazine back in March, Gilroy talked about he wanted to see the Star Wars expand into other genres, then joked that the success of Andor should pave the way for a sitcom or horror project: “I always fantasized that the show would break new ground, that someone would be able to make a three-camera sitcom in Star Wars or a horror movie. I think the first thing I said to Kathy [Kennedy] when she said they wanted to open a line, was, ‘Could you do a courtroom drama? And why not?’ We’ve worked really hard on Andor to make our lane, and it’s up to other people now to find another way to do it.”
Speaking to Business Insider more recently at the London event, Gilroy responded to a question about his previous comment about the Star Wars series he'd like to see, including a horror story, telling the outlet, “They’re doing that. I think they’re doing that. I think that’s in the works, yeah.”
At this time, it's still unclear if that Star Wars horror project is a potential TV series for Disney+, a film, or a video game. And if that project exists, Gilroy is seemingly not involved in its production, based on his comments about being perfectly happy to wrap up his time on Star Wars with the completion of the Andor series.
Fully aware of how seriously Star Wars fans take the franchise and its future, Gilroy reeled back his response a bit. “I’m agnostic about what should be done," he said. "I was riffing on the thing where I said, ‘Oh, do a three-camera comedy,’ so I was riffing. Sometimes riffing doesn’t work with the Star Wars community.”
Gilroy isn't the first filmmaker to publicly bring up about the possibility of a Star Wars horror project. In a since-deleted tweet back in 2021, Midnight Mass and Doctor Sleep director Mike Flanagan wrote that he wanted to make a Star Wars horror film. Considering how his pitch for a horror film for Clayface was confirmed by DC Studios and is now slated for a 2026 theatrical release, it seems like Flanagan would be a good choice to helm a genre-crossing Star Wars project.
Andor Season 2 is scheduled to premiere with its first three episodes on Disney+ on April 22. Speaking about the series, Gilroy told Business Insider, “The right creator, and the right moment, and the right vibe … you can do anything. So, my hope is that the show connects, and then we can pass along the favor that we were given from Mandalorian, and we can pass along a good healthy backwind to someone else who wants to do something else cool.”
