As Polygon first pointed out, the September 3 issue of Production Weekly listed both Star Wars: New Jedi Order and Dave Filoni’s untitled Star Wars film among projects in development. The magazine’s inclusion does not confirm a full greenlight or an imminent start date. It does signal that neither title has been quietly dropped from Lucasfilm’s slate.
What will Star Wars: New Jedi Order be about?
Star Wars: New Jedi Order is expected to return Daisy Ridley as Rey about 15 years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The story is framed around her effort to rebuild the Jedi in a galaxy still living with the aftermath of that conflict. Plot specifics remain limited, but the film is positioned as a continuation of Rey’s path rather than a clean reset of the saga.
The screenplay has changed hands more than once. Damon Lindelof, known for Lost, The Leftovers, and Watchmen, originally shared writing duties with Justin Britt-Gibson before Disney parted ways with them; the pair later teamed on HBO’s Lanterns. Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight later joined and then left in 2024. George Nolfi, whose credits include The Bourne Ultimatum, was reported in January as the current writer, while Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy remains attached to direct. The movie once carried a December 17, 2027 theatrical date before Disney pulled it from the schedule in May 2025.
What will Dave Filoni’s Star Wars movie be about?
Production Weekly describes the untitled Filoni film this way: “The story will focus on the New Republic and will conclude the interconnected narratives told in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, and other Disney Plus series.” In other words, the feature is framed as a capstone for the live-action stories that have run across those shows rather than a standalone side tale. That premise would gather threads from multiple series into one theatrical ending.
Filoni became president and chief creative officer at Lucasfilm in January. He has shaped a long run of Star Wars television, including The Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels, Ahsoka, and Maul – Shadow Lord. Those series built the New Republic-era continuity this movie is now described as closing.
The only Star Wars film with a locked theatrical date is Star Wars: Starfighter, which opens May 28, 2027, and follows a new pilot story set five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. That confirmed slot sits beside two older titles that spent years in near-silence, which is why the Production Weekly listings matter: they put Star Wars: New Jedi Order and Filoni’s New Republic film back on the active board while Star Wars: Starfighter already holds the next firm date.
