What is Snowball Earth about?

Snowball Earth is the debut major serialized work by manga creator Yuhiro Tsujitsugu, born in 1994 in Hyogo Prefecture. Before entering the manga industry full-time, Tsujitsugu worked at a film company involved in promoting anime and other projects. They earned early recognition by winning an Honorable Mention in the 86th Tezuka Award in 2013 for an earlier work titled Gori Macho Heart.

A prototype version of Snowball Earth later secured the Spirits Award in 2019, paving the way for its official serialization in Shogakukan's seinen magazine Monthly Big Comic Spirits starting January 27, 2021. The series has since built a strong following for its blend of mecha action, kaiju battles, and heartfelt character drama in a post-apocalyptic setting

Here's VIZ Media's story description of Snowball Earth:

Yukio was destroyed in battle and Tetsuo survived in an escape pod. After eight years in cold sleep, the escape pod finally lands back on Earth. But when Tetsuo emerges he finds a world in ruins, entirely frozen beneath a blanket of ice and snow—snowball Earth! What happened to humanity, how did the planet freeze over, and will Tetsuo be able to keep his last promise to Yukio?

The narrative explores themes of survival, loss, friendship, and redemption in a post-apocalyptic environment. Tetsuo must confront the changes to his world, uncover the cause of the global freeze (potentially linked to the kaiju war or other unforeseen forces), and fulfill a poignant promise made to his fallen companion. The series masterfully combines elements of mecha action, where giant robots clash with massive alien beasts, with kaiju-inspired monster designs and a desolate, frozen sci-fi backdrop.
