Happy Kanako's Killer Life Teaser Puts a Burned-Out Office Worker in a Hitman Agency With Weekends Off

Burned out by a black company, the office worker at the heart of Happy Kanako's Killer Life trades her desk for contract killing — with weekends off and full benefits.

A teaser trailer for Happy Kanako's Killer Life introduces Nishino Kanako, an office worker so burned out by her black company that the most appealing job listing she can find belongs to an agency of contract killers. The anime's official website announced the adaptation on Friday, confirming the main cast and staff for the series, which premieres in April 2027.

The teaser leans into the joke at the heart of the series, presenting the hitman agency like any other white-collar employer advertising a healthy workplace. Kanako's new career comes with a starting salary of 600,000 yen, weekends and holidays off, and full benefits — the only catch being that the job itself is contract killing.

Watch the teaser trailer here:

The accompanying teaser visual shows Kanako in a blue office suit, seated calmly under a spotlight while a ring of hands aims pistols, rifles and submachine guns at her from the darkness. The visual carries the same deadpan job-listing copy as the trailer, spelling out the salary, holidays and benefits before landing on the position itself: hitman.

Hana Shugai voices Nishino Kanako, the former office worker whose job hunt lands her at the killer agency. Kanako starts the story with little self-confidence, and the series follows her discovering she is alarmingly good at her new line of work.

Ryota Suzuki voices Sakurai, Kanako's senior at the agency and the prickly coworker she is determined to impress. Sakurai serves as the professional standard Kanako measures herself against as she adjusts to life as an assassin.

Junichi Suwabe voices the President, the head of the agency who takes Kanako on. The three leads were announced together with comments from the cast, the director and the manga's creator on the official website.

Shinji Takamatsu directs the anime at studio drive and also handles the scripts, bringing a long comedy résumé that includes Kochikame, Gintama and Grand Blue. Yoshiyuki Okubo, known for the Symphogear series, provides the character designs and serves as chief animation director.

Studio drive previously animated the third season of KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World!, and the production was announced through TOHO animation. No broadcaster or streaming partner has been announced for the series yet.

What is Happy Kanako's Killer Life about?

The anime adapts Toshiya Wakabayashi's full-color hitman career-change comedy manga, published by Seikaisha under its Seikaisha COMICS label across nine volumes in Japan, with Seven Seas Entertainment releasing the manga in English. The manga became a major social media hit in Japan, has surpassed 1.2 million copies in circulation, and has already inspired a live-action drama series.

Here is the official description of Happy Kanako from Seven Seas Entertainment:

Nishino Kanako sure hates her job, and is only too happy to snag the first new gig that comes her way. She never expected that her interview would be at an agency for contract killers…or that she’d be really, really good at bumping people off! Kanako doesn’t have a ton of self-confidence, and adjusting to her new life as an assassin isn’t the easiest. Will she ever earn the respect of Sakurai, her prickly but kinda hot new coworker? Find out in this dangerously funny, full-color manga!
