The new Fable game is expected to launch this Fall, though the reboot could potentially be delayed to 2027 if internal concerns about clashing with GTA 6 lead to a schedule shift. Playground Games' bold reboot of the classic action-RPG series aims to bring players back to the satirical, choice-driven world of Albion with stunning open-world exploration, fluid combat mixing swords, guns, and spells, and the franchise's trademark British wit, all built on the studio's ForzaTech expertise.

Reporter James Grubb revealed that the Fable Reboot was “apparently” pushed internally. The development team is still trying to release the game this year but is “worried about the launch of GTA 6.” If the internal adjustment moves the project past Rockstar’s blockbuster window, Fable could become a “prime candidate” for a full shift to 2027.

“I’ll say that I’ve heard that Fable has been pushed internally,” the reporter said, “That doesn’t mean that it’s coming out next year. Apparently, they’re still trying to get it out this year, but they are worried about the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6. And so if it’s getting delayed beyond the release of Grand Theft Auto 6, that could push it into December, which might make it a prime candidate to get delayed into 2027. So while Xbox will have a lot of games coming out this year, that’s one that there’s still a big question mark around.”

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026. With the massive anticipation surrounding Rockstar’s next entry in the Grand Theft Auto franchise, developers across the industry are expected to steer clear of that date for the launches of their own games to avoid being overshadowed by what is widely projected to be one of the biggest releases in gaming history.

Despite the uncertainty, the official Fable X account recently responded to a fan: “we're excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!”

What to Expect in Fable Reboot

The Fable Reboot will deliver a seamless open-world experience set in the iconic land of Albion. Players will control a fully customizable hero who can switch fluidly between melee combat, ranged attacks, and powerful spells during encounters. The game revives the series’ hallmark morality system, where choices influence reputation, NPC reactions, and even the hero’s physical appearance over time.

Gameplay extends far beyond combat and quests. Features include buying and managing properties across towns, forming relationships that can lead to marriage or even co-parenting, and interacting with a living population of more than a thousand unique NPCs. The title draws clear inspiration from British comedy, including the dry wit of shows like The Office, while incorporating classic Fable elements such as heroic quests from the Guild and battles against returning enemies like Hobbes and Balverines.

Playground Games, best known for the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series, brings its expertise in expansive, detailed open worlds to the fantasy genre for the first time. The studio has been working on the Fable Reboot for several years following the original announcement, updating the franchise’s fairy-tale roots with contemporary visuals powered by the ForzaTech engine. Early previews highlight a vibrant, textured version of Albion that feels like a living medieval British postcard, complete with dynamic weather, detailed towns like Bowerstone, and plenty of opportunities for lighthearted mischief—such as the now-famous chicken-kicking mechanics that have become a talking point among fans of the series.

The original Fable trilogy, created by Lionhead Studios under Peter Molyneux, defined a generation of RPGs with its blend of satire, player freedom, and memorable storytelling. After Lionhead’s closure in 2016, the franchise lay dormant until Microsoft revealed the reboot in 2020. This new entry serves as a hard reboot, aiming to introduce the series to a new audience while honoring what made the originals special.

With no involvement from Molyneux, Playground has focused on delivering polished, modern gameplay that emphasizes exploration without strict time pressure, allowing players to shape their hero’s journey and the broader world at their own pace. The project also represents a significant diversification for the studio, which will release Forza Horizon 6 earlier in 2026, giving Microsoft two major first-party titles from the same developer in the same calendar year.
