The Game of the Year race just got its biggest entrant — by about 24 hours. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, and The Game Awards' official eligibility rules require games to be commercially available on or before Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 p.m. PT, which means Rockstar's open-world giant qualifies for this year's show with a day to spare.
The confirmation comes from The Game Awards' own voting jury page, which lays out the cutoff for jury-voted categories. The fan-voted Players' Voice category is more forgiving still, with games eligible as long as they ship on or before November 30, 2026. GTA 6 clears both bars comfortably on that front, but it is the jury cutoff — the one that governs Game of the Year and the craft categories — where the margin is razor-thin.
The snug fit raised eyebrows online, with some fans suggesting the goalposts were moved for Rockstar. The dates do not support that theory. Last year's cutoff fell on November 21, and the year before on November 22 — The Game Awards has consistently drawn the line on the Friday of the third week of November, and this year's date simply landed one day after the biggest launch in the industry's history.
The question had hung over the game for months. Ever since Rockstar settled on the November 19 date, commentators — including former PlayStation advocate Alanah Pearce, who raised the cutoff issue in September — had openly wondered whether a mid-November launch would shut the game out of the 2026 race entirely and push its awards run into 2027. Today's confirmation ends that speculation: the race is on this year, and every other contender now has to share the ballot with it.
Eligibility, however, is not the same as a fair fight. The show's jury of media and influencer voters will have had the game for only a short window before ballots are due, and GTA 6 is expected to be an enormous game that takes dozens of hours to properly judge. Whether voters can give it a full hearing in time is the real question hanging over its Game of the Year chances.
Rockstar has history here. Red Dead Redemption 2 took home four awards at the 2018 show, including Best Narrative and Best Performance for Roger Clark's Arthur Morgan. The record it would chase belongs to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which won nine awards last year, including Game of the Year.
The Game Awards 2026 streams live on Thursday, December 10, 2026, from the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
