Over the span of almost half a century, the galaxy far, far away already has countless actors and actresses that formed part of the franchise through the years and most of them haven't encountered each other while on set, either because they were from different timelines, or their characters would not meet in the narrative. This proves to be true for the mother and son, Padmé Amidala and Luke Skywalker whose paths never crossed in Star Wars. Recently, during the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, Mark Hamill finally met his Star Wars mother for the first time and Natalie Portman shares the experience in a recent interview.
Star Wars started with the Original Trilogy where Mark Hamill played Luke Skywalker who made a mark in the franchise being an icon on his own. Then, the Prequel Trilogy followed where Natalie Portman portrayed the role of Padmé Amidala, the mother of Luke Skywalker and because of her fate, she never got the chance to have some time with her son on-screen. Thankfully, the 2024 Golden Globe Awards made their meeting happen and it was shared by Mark Hamill on Instagram. See the post below:
Despite being under the same franchise, the two actors never met and that was the first time they encountered each other even though they play mother and son in Star Wars. Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live (see the clip below), Natalie Portman shared her side of the story upon meeting her Star Wars son for the first time. Portman revealed:
It took two decades before the two actors could meet which makes the moment a precious one considering their relationship in the franchise. Their characters never met each other as they belonged to two different timelines.
Is it possible for Luke Skywalker and Padmé Amidala to return in Star Wars?
While both of the actors remain open to reprising their respective roles in Star Wars, the two share different perspectives on returning to the franchise. Natalie Portman revealed to Watch What Happens Live that she is open to be back in the galaxy far, far away but no one asked her to return as Padmé Amidala, and with what is currently happening in the narrative of Star Wars, any character can be brought back to life. There is a theory on the return of Padmé Amidala related to Baylan Skoll in Ahsoka wherein the actress could potentially be back through the "Mother" or "Abeloth."
Meanwhile, Mark Hamill is also open to reprise his role as Luke Skywalker which he did recently in The Mandalorian Season 2 with a de-aged version of him, and in The Book of Boba Fett. However, the actor spoke to CBS News Sunday Morning where he said, "Well, you never say never. I just don't see any reason to. Let me put it that way: I mean, they have so many stories to tell, they don't need Luke anymore."
All Star Wars titles are available on Disney Plus.
