Fans have bombarded social media in order to rant and share their frustration after Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 didn’t win a single award at The Game Awards 2023, regardless of getting nominated in seven categories. The game was initially released on October 20 to many positive reviews from both fans and critics.

This led to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 eventually getting nominated for Game of the Year, Innovation in Accessibility, Best Narrative, Player’s Voice Award, Best Game Direction, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Audio Design at The Game Awards.

Unfortunately for Insomniac Games, this year was filled with some fierce competitions like Alan Wake 2, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Baldur’s Gate 3. Consequently, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was pushed out of all seven award categories.

Some players were looking at things more realistically and practically regarding the lack of awards, with many talking about other high-quality games released in 2023 being the reason behind the decisions. A Reddit user called tylernazario wrote, “It makes sense. The gameplay was an improvement from the first but the story was a step down in terms of quality and length. Plus this year was stacked with lots of great games.” However, the rest were just plain disappointed.

On the other hand, Insomniac Games reacted to the whole thing with grace and quickly thanked fans and congratulated the winners of this year’s awards. It wrote on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, “A major thank you to everyone who nominated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 in several categories at The Game Awards this year. It’s an honour to have had your support. Congrats to all the winners and nominees. You all deserved it.”

This entire scene took fans back to the results of the 2018 awards, in which Insomniac’s first title Marvel’s Spider-Man was also edged out by games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and God of War after also getting nominated in seven categories.

What’s next for Insomniac Games?

Now that Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is officially done and dusted, it looks like Insomniac Games has shifted its focus to its next big title, which is Marvel's Wolverine. They announced the game back in 2021 along with Marvel's Spider-Man 2, but it hasn't received any new updates ever since it was announced.

However, Insomniac Games' Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations, Ryan Schneider, did mention that the game would be directed by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director), who are also responsible for creating the recent Spider-Man: Miles Morales game. We also know that Marvel's Wolverine will be set in the same universe as Insomniac's Spider-Man video games, so we might even see a crossover.

The developers refuse to share any more information regarding the game, so we have no idea what the game has in store for players. However, a leak regarding Marvel's Wolverine was going around some time back which suggested that the game's potential concept artist has given a release date of 2024. However, since it's just a leak and hasn't been officially confirmed yet, it shouldn't be taken seriously.
