Passion Paris, which belongs to the renowned Academy Award-winning Passion Pictures group, has teamed up with the European video-on-demand service ADN, also known as Animation Digital Network, to co-produce an animated series based on the popular webtoon Hero Killer. This collaboration was revealed during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival 2026, with acclaimed director David Pagaille at the helm of the project.
The Hero Killer webtoon, an action-fantasy masterpiece released by Jaedam Media and crafted by talented writer Kkulbeol alongside illustrator Beolkkul, stands out as one of the top-performing titles on Naver’s Webtoon platform, recognized widely as the premier destination for South Korean digital comics. With translations available in ten different languages and over two hundred and fifty episodes already published, this series has drawn in vast audiences globally thanks to its impressive artwork, high-stakes battles, and intricate plot developments that explore themes of power and morality. The upcoming animated adaptation seeks to faithfully capture the epic scope, thrilling sequences, and emotional depth of the source material, making it accessible and engaging for fans new and old across various regions and demographics.
“What kind of justice exists in a world where those with power cannot be held accountable? What choices are there for those who have nothing left? It is these mature, nuanced and resolutely contemporary questions, at the heart of a blend of action and compelling characters, that ultimately inspired me to bring this story and this world to life!” remarked director David Pagaille, emphasizing the thoughtful exploration of societal issues woven into the narrative.
His vision for the series underscores a commitment to blending intense fight choreography with character-driven moments that challenge traditional notions of heroism and villainy. This approach is expected to elevate the adaptation beyond mere spectacle, offering layers of thematic richness that invite audiences to reflect on broader concepts of accountability and resilience in challenging circumstances.
To celebrate the announcement, a striking new teaser visual created by the original webtoon creators Kkulbeol and Beolkkul has been released, providing an early glimpse into the artistic direction and vibrant style that the animated series will embrace.
David Pagaille has established himself as a distinctive voice in animation by skillfully merging influences from Japanese anime traditions with his own innovative artistic sensibilities, resulting in works that feel both familiar and refreshingly original. His prior project, the Annie Award-nominated 2024 short film Moonlit Bamboo Forest produced for Passion and situated within the expansive universe of the popular game Genshin Impact, showcased his ability to craft immersive environments and emotionally resonant tales.
