The anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) has reached fever pitch, with fans eagerly awaiting the next chapter in Rockstar Games’ iconic open-world crime saga. Grand Theft Auto V, now over a decade old, has sold more than 215 million copies, largely due to the enduring success of Grand Theft Auto Online. After an unusually long gap, GTA 6 is poised to arrive in 2026, promising a return to the neon-soaked streets of Vice City. Here’s the latest on the GTA 6 release date and what to expect from this highly anticipated title.

GTA 6 Release Date: When Is It Coming Out?

Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. A PC release has not been announced, leaving fans uncertain about whether the game will follow the pattern of previous Rockstar titles, which often see delayed PC versions. No pricing details for GTA 6 have been shared as of yet.

Initially, Rockstar targeted a fall 2025 release for GTA 6, prompting some publishers to adjust their own release schedules to avoid competing with the juggernaut. However, in May 2025, just before unveiling a new GTA 6 trailer, Rockstar announced a significant delay, pushing the game to May 2026. In a statement, the developer addressed the shift:

We are very sorry that this is later than you expected. The interest and excitement surrounding a new Grand Theft Auto has been truly humbling for our entire team. We want to thank you for your support and your patience as we work to finish the game. With every game we have released, the goal has always been to try and exceed your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no exception. We hope you understand that we need this extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.

This delay reflects Rockstar’s commitment to delivering a polished experience, building on their reputation for crafting expansive, immersive worlds.

Will GTA 6 get delayed again?

Delays are not uncommon for Rockstar Games, known for their meticulous attention to detail. Titles like Grand Theft Auto IV, Grand Theft Auto V, and Red Dead Redemption 2 all faced delays to ensure quality. While there are no current indications of another postponement, the stakes for GTA 6 are exceptionally high, with Rockstar aiming for what they describe as “the largest game launch in history.” Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, expressed strong confidence in the May 2026 date, with CEO Strauss Zelnick stating in August 2025 that his “level of conviction is very, very high” for meeting the deadline.

However, given the massive expectations and the need to avoid launch issues seen in other high-profile releases, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Rockstar may opt for additional time if needed to refine the game. The lack of updates on Grand Theft Auto Online’s future or its potential integration with GTA 6 also raises questions about the scope of the project, which could influence the timeline.
