Daredevil: Born Again is undergoing several changes starting with the recent firing of the show's creative team. Not surprisingly, Steven DeKnight has something to say about the whole situation. The former showrunner, who worked on the first season of the Netflix series, pointed out that Marvel Studios and Disney are finally coming to their senses and realizing what the reboot truly needs.
In late September 2023, Marvel Studios made a significant decision to revamp Daredevil: Born Again even though less than half of the episodes had been filmed. The overhaul included the replacement of head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord and the release of the remaining directors. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the plan was to find a traditional showrunner to handle the reboot, which only had a team of writers when it began filming.
The news was a welcome one for DeKnight, who continues to criticize Marvel Studios and Disney for the reboot. When a fan asked whether the former showrunner was happy about the new show being "scrapped", DeKnight quickly clarified that his satisfaction lies in the studios finally realizing their mistake.
"I am not happy the show is scrapped and have consistently stated the opposite," he wrote. "However I AM delighted that they finally realized you need an actual showrunner who's a writer to make a series work."
It might seem like a major setback but many believe that the overhaul is the best move for Daredevil: Born Again, which is set to be a reboot of the original series that was produced by Netflix and Marvel Studios. For now, it has not yet been announced who will be brought in to serve as showrunner or writers on the highly anticipated show. However, considering that this means everything will start from scratch, Born Again could be delayed indefinitely to a later release date. After all, the Daredevil reboot had already started filming in March this year before being put on hold due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Daredevil: Born Again was initially set to consist of 18 episodes in its first season. The series will bring back Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, and Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle aka The Punisher. For now, the new show does not have an official release date but an announcement is expected before the end of the year.
