Former Daredevil Showrunner Calls MCU Reboot 'A Disney Scam'

Steven DeKnight slammed Disney for changing things up for the Marvel series

The former showrunner of Netflix's Daredevil didn't hold back in expressing their displeasure with Marvel Studios and Disney over the upcoming rebooted series featuring Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio. Steven S. DeKnight has spoken up about Daredevil: Born Again, calling it "a Disney scam."

The criticism comes after a former crew member of the Netflix series posted about how Daredevil was cancelled as soon as the crew "got full raise and holiday/vacation pay." Because he was tagged in the tweet, DeKnight retweeted and shared his opinion on the reboot.

"It’s an old Disney scam where they slightly rename a series to reset contract terms back to first season. Needs to be addressed by all the guilds/unions and crushed!" DeKnight wrote.

DeKnight only served as showrunner on the show's first season but it's an interesting yet depressing insight into how TV shows are developed and taken care of. Although the Daredevil cancellation (along with the other Marvel Netflix shows) was attributed to Disney's acquisition of Marvel, it's also sad to know that the show simply couldn't be continued for the sake of the cast and crew.

Is Daredevil: Born Again a Reboot?

Not surprisingly, the former showrunner's criticisms have added fuel to the ongoing debate among fans regarding the nature of this new Daredevil series, leaving many curious about how it will ultimately fit into the larger MCU landscape.

In May 2022, Disney+ confirmed a new series titled Daredevil: Born Again, set to follow Matt Murdock within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, this announcement left fans wondering whether it would continue the story from the original Netflix series or constitute a complete reboot.

Despite Marvel Studios not explicitly labeling it as a "reboot," several decisions, such as the recasting of Vanessa Fisk, reimagining Kingpin's origin, and the absence of characters like Foggy Nelson and Karen Page, strongly suggest that this is indeed a fresh narrative within the MCU.
