What in the multiverse is happening to the Marvel Cinematic Universe? As the MCU nears the end of Phase 5 of the Multiverse Saga, problems are starting to pile up on one particular movie that is currently slated for a 2026 release: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Recently, there were rumors that the franchise will now steer away Jonathan Majors' Kang villain as the main big bad of the whole saga. Now, the film suffers another blow as director Destin Daniel Cretton departs the project, leaving it without a director.

Destin Daniel Cretton brought Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings to life with his direction and with it came the news that the same director has been tapped by Marvel Studios to take helm on Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Other than the fifth Avengers movie, Cretton is also attached to an untitled Shang-Chi sequel and the Wonder Man TV series on Disney Plus. However, in a report from Deadline, it was revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton left Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and now without a director.

The report says that the exit of Cretton was something "amicable" and that Cretton is not totally leaving the whole MCU as he remains attached as the director of the Shang-Chi sequel, and that of the Wonder Man TV series. While there is still some time to look for a new director given the 2026 release window of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Marvel Studios remains silent on the replacement of the director of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.

No, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is not cancelled and it remains as the penultimate of MCU's Phase Six and the whole Multiverse Saga. However, rumors surround the possibility that the movie will be renamed, similar to what they did to Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, as the MCU seems to have been steering away from Jonathan Majors' villain as the main villain of the whole Multiverse Saga. While there has been no official announcement yet, the penultimate movie remains titled as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but now, the director's seat remains vacated.
