Loki is not walking into Avengers: Doomsday as the same god of mischief fans met in 2011. Tom Hiddleston says his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins from an entirely different place — one shaped by everything his character endured at the end of Loki Season 2.
In an interview with Nerd Reactor conducted during press for Apple TV's Tenzing, Hiddleston explained how the Disney+ series' finale redefined his starting point for the upcoming Avengers film. The reel, posted October 8, carries the on-screen text "Loki's New Purpose in Avengers: Doomsday."
Hiddleston described the Loki Season 2 finale as the moment his character finally found peace. "The end of Loki season 2, I think Loki is afforded redemption and catharsis," he said, framing the finale as the completion of a journey that began all the way back in the first Thor film. That resolution, he explained, gave him something he had never had before when stepping into an Avengers movie: "it created a new starting point."
The actor traced Loki's evolution back to his very first MCU appearance. In 2012's The Avengers, Loki declared, "I am Loki of Asgard. And I am burdened with glorious purpose." Hiddleston reflected on how that line has transformed in meaning over fourteen years. Where the younger Loki saw purpose as something to wield over others, the version arriving in Doomsday understands it differently: "That it will be more burden than glory."
Hiddleston also spoke about what drives the character at his core, describing Loki as a complicated figure yearning for identity, belonging, and acceptance — someone who felt he never truly belonged to Asgard and carried enormous grief that became the engine of his time as an antagonist. By the end of Loki Season 2, that grief gives way to something else: a realization that he can use his power as a god for a greater purpose, choosing to exist for others.
The interviewer raised a fan theory that Loki could serve as a "molecule man"-type figure in the film, and Hiddleston responded carefully, noting he has to tread lightly with the movie still months away. He stopped short of confirming any specifics about Loki's role in the plot.
Loki Season 2 ended with its title character holding the timelines together as the God of Stories, a monumental shift from trickster to caretaker of the multiverse. That ending positions him uniquely among the heroes assembling for Doomsday, as the one character already standing at the center of the multiverse's fragile architecture.
Hiddleston is currently on the press circuit for Tenzing, in which he plays Sir Edmund Hillary. The film opens in select U.S. theaters October 9 before streaming on Apple TV starting October 16.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters December 18, 2026.
