The Skywalker Saga may not be finished after all. A new report claims Star Wars Episode X is moving forward at Lucasfilm with two brand-new leads at its center and Rey returning in a mentor role, although nothing about the project has been confirmed by the studio.
The details were laid out by SFF Gazette, drawing on reporting from Daniel Richtman, who says the film would follow two leads with Rey serving as their mentor. Rey's own standalone film, first announced back in 2023, is described as on hold rather than cancelled, with her story now expected to continue through Episode X instead.
Star Wars insider FivesWalker has backed up the report and added the casting picture. "This is true – they're looking for male and female actors in their early – mid 20's. I think the aim to is to find unknowns. But casting has been underway for a little bit now," the insider said.
The Orphan And The Royal At The Center Of Star Wars Episode X
The male lead is described as an orphan from a harsh background much like Rey's own, who is swept up into the story after being implicated in a killing. Paired with him, the film's two leads are said to echo a familiar pairing: "Episode X will have duo leads like Finn and Rey. Their dynamic is very much that archetype, but with a more clearly defined romantic component," FivesWalker said.
The female lead comes from the opposite end of the galaxy's social ladder. "[The] female lead comes from high society, a perfectionist. Royalty," FivesWalker said, adding that she is the one who brings the male lead onto the larger stage of known Star Wars characters for the pair's big adventure together.
One rumor the report shuts down is the idea that the male lead is Flynn Gray's character from Star Wars: Starfighter. Despite speculation that the character would become one of Rey's apprentices, the Episode X lead is said to be someone else entirely.
Jon Watts is set to direct the film from a script by Simon Kinberg, and it would continue the saga after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Rey is, technically, the last Skywalker standing, which is what makes her reported mentor role the thread connecting the new leads to everything that came before them.
It is not yet clear what connection, if any, the two new leads have to the wider galaxy beyond Rey herself. Until Lucasfilm confirms any of it, Episode X's new duo stays in the rumor column — but if the reports hold, the saga's next chapter belongs to an orphan, a royal, and the Jedi mentoring them both.
