Zombie-themed movies and shows are fan-favorites, as always, that when Zack Snyder released his take on the undead on Netflix, the film was an absolute hit. Army of the Dead brought a major viewership that it got a prequel, Army of Thieves, a sequel titled Planet of the Dead, and supposedly, an animated spinoff, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas. Unfortunately, the director drops a disappointing update on the spinoff series as it might not get to see the light of day.
Army of the Dead released in 2021 and bagged 186.5 million hours watched on the streaming platform across 75 million households around the world in just the first four weeks of its release. Plans were made for the expansion of the story and one pushed through as the Army of Thieves made it on Netflix, however, in an interview with Zack Snyder on Total Film (via GamesRadar), the director revealed that the animated spinoff series, Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, may not be happening soon, or even ever:
Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into the movie. There’s actually a character from Rebel Moon in the animated series that we never did. We did all the scripts and the animatics, and all the voices are recorded. So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run.
Is Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas Canceled on Netflix?
In the interview, Zack Snyder addressed how his project on Netflix are connected as he unveiled that his upcoming movie Rebel Moon would have a character from the Army of the Dead animated series, Lost Vegas. In his words, he said that they never did it, which means that the animated series may have been cut off or scrapped on Netflix. While Snyder did not suggest an alternative, he was pretty clear that the show came across a brick wall that it may never pass.
In the past years, Netflix has been bombarded by successive cancellations of movies and shows that people online are calling to #CancelNetflix with the various titles canceled such as Warrior Nun, Fate: The Winx Saga, GLOW, I Am Not Okay With This, and more. With or without a reason, the cancellations kept coming and unfortunately for Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, it now belongs to the list of shows that people may not ever see on screen. Snyder, however, did not reveal any update on the sequel, Planet of the Dead, and hopes are still up that it would happen.
Currently, Zack Snyder is busy with his upcoming movie Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire which will be having a second part soon after the release of the first this December 22, 2023. Army of the Dead and Army of Thieves are available to stream on Netflix.
