Since Zack Snyder released his zombie heist movie, Army of the Dead, in 2021, fans have been waiting for its sequel, Army of the Dead 2. Thankfully, after delaying the project to complete his new masterpiece, Rebel Moon, the renowned filmmaker gives a major update about his highly anticipated sequel of the post-apocalyptic zombie movie.
Army of the Dead became one of the most-watched original movies on Netflix, with over 72 million views within a month of release. With its success, it’s no surprise that a second installment received a green light in the same year. However, back in March, Snyder revealed that the development of Army of the Dead 2 was put on hold until he finishes Rebel Moon.
Now that his two-part epic space opera movie is done, the Justice League director teased what Army of the Dead 2 would be like. In an interview with Screen Rant, the 57-year-old revealed the sequel would be “pretty twisted.”
He even answered the question of what it was like doing two movie franchises for Netflix back and forth. Snyder said:
I thought about it a lot. It's funny because I was trying to figure out the cadence and how we would go forward and whether we're going to do the Army of the Dead sequel and then come back and do another one of these [ Rebel Moon ] movies if it's desired.
So, instead of going back and forth between two different universes, Snyder chose to complete Rebel Moon first. Does this mean Army of the Dead 2 will soon be in the works? No one knows, but many hope so. He continued:
Because Army goes completely nuts. If we were to make another Army movie other than...the Mathias arm of Army Universe [ Army of Thieves ] has its own thing happening, but the main trunk gets pretty twisted as it goes up. And then to have these two things, it would be nice...because you could kind of go back and forth between the two [universes].
Zack Snyder’s Own Cinematic Universes
After leaving the DC following the release of the Justice League director’s cut in 2021, Snyder started his own cinematic universes with Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon. As the sci-fi movie, which came out as a rejected Star Wars pitch, will hit Netflix in December, he planned to expand his zombie action universe following Army of the Dead and its prequel Army of Thieves.
In fact, even before Army of the Dead was released, there was a plan to develop a prequel anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, which would see the start of the zombie outbreak. However, just like Army of the Dead 2, it was stalled to give way to Rebel Moon.
What will happen in Army of the Dead 2?
In an interview with BadTaste on YouTube, Snyder revealed he knew exactly what the sequel would be. "I already have that figured out," he said.
However, fans must first see Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas to understand what will happen in the movie sequel. "The scale of the movie would inevitably increase," he continued.
With this new update, fans are once again hopeful that there will be Army of the Dead 2. As Snyder earlier teased, the franchise is "alive and well," and so Scott Ward’s (Dave Bautista) zombie adventure will continue.
