Two Star Wars Films Gain Momentum with New Working Titles

The working titles for two upcoming Star Wars films reportedly revealed, but there are no recent updates from Lucasfilm.

Lucasfilm is forging ahead with two highly anticipated Star Wars films, each helmed by acclaimed directors bringing distinct visions to the galaxy far, far away. Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, a stand-alone adventure featuring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth, is gearing up for production, while Taika Waititi’s long-in-development project promises his signature blend of humor and heart. These films mark an exciting expansion of the Star Wars universe, exploring new characters and timelines to captivate audiences.

Nearly four months after its official announcement, Star Wars: Starfighter has received a new update, alongside fresh details about Waititi’s film, as reported by Nexus Point News. Both projects have been assigned working titles: Kyber Mist for Levy’s film and Cosmic Doom for Waititi’s.

These titles offer a tantalizing glimpse into the thematic directions of each film, with Kyber Mist evoking the mystical allure of kyber crystals, central to lightsabers and Star Wars lore, suggesting a story tied to the Force or its artifacts. Conversely, Cosmic Doom hints at a grand, possibly ominous narrative, aligning with Waititi’s knack for balancing epic stakes with irreverent wit.

Taika Waititi’s Cosmic Doom Takes Shape

Taika Waititi’s Star Wars project, first announced five years ago, is progressing with its newly revealed working title, Cosmic Doom. Produced under the name Ghost Truck 6, the film is being directed by Waititi from a screenplay by Oscar-nominated writer Tony McNamara. Plot and character details are still closely guarded, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has voiced strong support for Waititi’s vision.

“Taika is on Taika time,” she told Screen Rant back in April 2025, emphasizing the studio’s patience for the Oscar-winning filmmaker to fully commit. She added, “I’m just hoping we get there. That will be a great Star Wars movie.” Unlike Star Wars: Starfighter, Cosmic Doom lacks a release date, reflecting its extended development.

Star Wars: Starfighter – What We Know So Far

Star Wars: Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy, is set to begin production in September in London, with filming expected to conclude by December. Operating under the production name Blue Mist Productions, the film is a stand-alone story set five years after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). It introduces all-new characters in an unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline, with Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth leading the cast. While character details remain under wraps, the film is slated for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027, promising a fresh addition to the franchise’s cinematic legacy.

The working titles Kyber Mist and Cosmic Doom not only fuel anticipation but also suggest distinct tonal identities for these films. Kyber Mist’s ethereal, Force-centric connotation contrasts with Cosmic Doom’s darker, expansive vibe, potentially setting the stage for diverse storytelling within the Star Wars universe. As Star Wars: Starfighter prepares for production and Cosmic Doom continues to evolve, Lucasfilm’s commitment to bold, original narratives signals a vibrant future for the franchise.
