Netflix has greenlit The Sandman Season 2 just a couple of months after the success of its first season’s release. However, more than a year has passed, and details about the return of The Lord of Dreams have remained scarce. But as the series is now back in production after it restarted last year, some of its episode titles have been now revealed, and they’re hinting at big connections to Greek mythology.

The update comes from the updated profile of director Jamie Childs, who serves as the second season’s executive producer, on Independent Talent, as reported by What’s on Netflix, as it seems the episode details are now deleted. It revealed that The Sandman Season 2 will reportedly have 12 episodes that may be divided into two parts, with six episodes each. Though Netflix has yet to confirm its two-volume release, the streamer is no stranger to following this practice, as seen in Stranger Things Season 4 and the upcoming Bridgerton Season 3.

The site then revealed the titles for the upcoming six episodes. As the other titles are yet to be revealed, they’re believed to be part of the first volume. In no particular order, they will be called The Song of Orpheus, More Devils than Vast Hell Can Hold, Brief Lives, Family Blood, The Ruler of Hell, and Season of Mists.

What are the meaning of The Sandman Season 2 episode titles?

Episode titles give an idea of what may happen in a show. In The Sandman, episode titles mean more than just being witty remarks. In fact, its titles reflect its mysterious atmosphere, just like the first season’s sixth episode, The Sound of Her Wings, which saw the introduction of Death. Though some of The Sandman Season 2 episode titles reference its characters and the comic book issues on which the series is based, others reveal its connection to Greek mythology and who may possibly appear next.

Take it from The Song of Orpheus. Though it also refers to the comic book’s issue and may center on Ruairi O’Connor’s character, he’s known for being a Thracian bard, legendary musician, and prophet in Greek mythology. With his love for his wife, Eurydice, he descended into the Underworld of Hades to bring her back. But for him to succeed, he should never look back as they made their way to the surface. But Orpheus did, resulting in Eurydice being lost to the Underworld forever.

Season of Mists is also named after the comic collection of the same title. Here, Odin, Thor, and Loki are expected to appear, delving into Greek mythology more. More Devils Than Vast Hell Can Hold refers to A Midsummer Night’s Dream, while The Ruler of Hell seems to focus on Gwendoline Christie’s Lucifer, though there are theories that there may be a new ruler of hell.

What is The Sandman Season 2 about?

The Sandman Season 2 will continue where the first season left off, with the forces of hell now on the move. As it will continuously dive into that conflict, it will also explore the challenges the universe faces after Morpheus’ disappearance. The series creator Neil Gaiman told Tudum that there would be more “astonishing stories” fans would see, along with more members of the Endless Family to meet. Aside from a family meal, the author also revealed that Lucifer is also waiting for Morpheus to return to hell.

“Nobody is going to be happier about this than the Sandman cast and crew,” he said as the production continued. “They are the biggest Sandman fans there are. And now, it’s time to get back to work.”
