There’s a new supernatural series fans should look forward to on Netflix: Dead Boy Detectives. Originally set to be released on Max, the show is now under Netflix and will be part of The Sandman universe. The streamer has now released the official trailer for the show. But aside from introducing the main characters Edwin Payne and Charles Rowland, it also reveals its The Sandman connection with Death’s appearance.

You can see the preview below:

The Dead Boy Detectives trailer opens with the appearance of Edwin and Charles as they step into the forest while a narrator welcomes the viewers to their agency. As Edwin touches a tomb, rings his bell, and knocks on it, the scene then cuts to an undead trying his way out of the grave. Crystal then appears, questioning the guys’ occupations and calling their brand “stupid.”

From there, their work begins as a woman hires them after hearing they’re the best in their field. “We help ghosts whose cases would go unsolved,” Edwin reveals as they start their investigation. A montage of scenes introduces the other characters and supernatural entities fans are about to meet, from ghosts to monsters and even witches.

The action commences when Edwin and Charles face different enemies alongside Crystal and her friend Niko. One man even transforms by putting himself in a fire and tries to seduce Edwin by kissing him. Death has also made her surprising appearance.

Is Dead Boy Detectives connected to The Sandman?

From its characters to its settings and style, the trailer seems to have referenced The Sandman with their similarities. Well, it’s not surprising at all, knowing it’s based on the characters created by Neil Gaiman, who’s also behind The Sandman. Netflix has also confirmed that it’s part of The Sandman universe. The trailer even shows the connection between the two with the appearance of Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste).

In addition, Edwin and Charles appear in Sandman #25 (April 1991), which serves as the characters’ origin story. This issue is tied to Volume 4 of The Sandman, Season of Misfits. There, Lucifer leaves Hell, resulting in the death to return to life in the Waking World.
