It's been a long time since the Star Wars franchise released a new film in theaters, but Lucasfilm and Disney are getting the titles ready for its upcoming future on the big screen. At the first day of Star Wars Celebration Japan 2025 today, a panel billed as a showcase for May 2026's The Mandalorian & Grogu film ended up sharing a tease for the next Star Wars films.

While the Shawn Levy-directed Star Wars: Starfighter film starring Ryan Gosling received much of the attention, Lucasfilm Kathleen President confirmed a full slate of Star Wars films still happening. Star Wars films from James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and a new trilogy by Simon Kinberg are currently in active development. The New Republic film from Dave Filoni is also still in development, but he is focused on developing Star Wars: Ahsoka Season 2 before he tackles that project.

Details about these Star Wars films are still being kept under wraps, but previous reports have revealed what they will be about. Mangold's film will be about the origins of the Jedi. Back in January 2025, Mangold revealed to MovieWeb that his Dawn of the Jedi film would be "taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies takes place." Obaid-Chinoy's film will see Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey Skywalker in a story focused on the New Jedi Order. Back in February, Daisy Ridley said that she know the film's story but didn't share any details for obvious reasons.

As for Waititi's film, Kathleen Kennedy revealed to Deadline earlier this year that she was waiting for another script from Waititi, but she didn't share any details. The story for Kinberg's movie trilogy also remains a mystery. Filoni's film is being described as a culmination of New Republic era storylines that have been developed on TV shows such as Ahsoka and The Mandalorian.

For now, it looks like the creative minds at Lucasfilm are more focused on getting the two Star Wars releasing in the next couple of years: Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu and Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starkiller. The former is confirmed to release in theaters on May 22, 2026 while the latter is currently scheduled to premiere on May 28, 2027.
