Darth Maul, the double-bladed lightsaber-wielding nightmare who once defined Sith ferocity, now finds himself quietly reevaluating the very Empire he helped bring into existence in the upcoming animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord.

The official synopsis of the series reads: "Set after the events of The Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. There, he crosses paths with a disillusioned young Jedi Padawan, who could be the apprentice he is seeking, that will aid him in his relentless pursuit for revenge."

In a recent interview with The HoloFiles, Sam Witwer, the voice actor behind Maul, the character undergoes a notable reevaluation of his long-held beliefs. “He was trained to hate and destroy the Jedi without ever questioning it,” Witwer explained. “Now he’s looking at the galaxy going, ‘Boy, we could sure use a Jedi Knight or two.’ At least with the Jedi you knew where they stood. There’s something to respect there. This Empire, he sees no values there, just the naked grab for influence, power, and money. Principles are gone. And he looks at that with a certain level of distaste. He may not have agreed with the Jedi Knights, but at least they had principles. You knew who you were dealing with and you could reason with that. There’s no reasoning with the Empire.”

This perspective highlights how Maul now views the Empire—not as the triumphant order he once helped forge under Darth Sidious—but as a corrupt entity devoid of honor or redeemable qualities. His lingering resentment toward Palpatine, combined with a grudging respect for the Jedi's adherence to code, positions him in a morally ambiguous space. Rather than blind Sith loyalty, Maul's actions in Maul – Shadow Lord appear driven by personal vendetta and a desire to carve out his own domain amid galactic chaos.

The series builds on Maul's rich history within the Star Wars universe. Introduced in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace as a fierce Sith apprentice, he survived being bisected and later resurfaced in The Clone Wars as a crime lord and vengeful survivor. His arc continued in Star Wars Rebels, where he sought purpose beyond rage. Maul – Shadow Lord bridges a key gap in this timeline, set roughly in the early Imperial era, allowing viewers to see how Maul adapts to a galaxy dominated by Palpatine's regime. The show emphasizes his strategic cunning as he rebuilds Crimson Dawn influences on a remote world, far from Imperial oversight, while encountering new allies and potential betrayals.

The animation style, produced by Lucasfilm Animation, draws from gritty, stylized visuals to capture the pulpy adventure tone. Maul's journey involves confronting not only external threats but also his internal conflicts, questioning the Sith ideology that shaped him.

In addition to Witwer reprising his iconic role, the voice cast of the Lucasfilm Animation show includes Gideon Adlon, Wagner Moura, Richard Ayoade, and more. These performers bring depth to a roster of new characters who intersect with Maul's path, from potential apprentices to rivals in the criminal underworld.

Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with a two-episode debut followed by weekly releases of two episodes each. The 10-episode season will conclude on May 4, 2026—Star Wars Day—offering a fitting culmination to this chapter in Maul's saga.
