Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Hints At The Return Of A Legendary Villain

Season 2 still has no Disney+ date, but Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord already points toward a much larger enemy than Maul’s visions.

The Star Wars galaxy still has more than a year to go before the next theatrical chapter arrives, yet streaming already delivered one of its strongest animated hits of the year. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord quickly became a standout on Disney+, drawing viewers with its sharp character work and brutal Sith politics. The series currently holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and remains available to stream in full on Disney+.

Disney renewed Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord for Season 2 back in April, well before the first season finished rolling out. Season 2 does not have an official premiere date on Disney+ yet. Sam Witwer has assured fans that the wait will not be too long.

Collider covered a panel interview at FanX in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Witwer discussed a late-season vision sequence that included Emperor Palpatine. He then teased the possibility of seeing that character outside Maul’s mind in a future installment. “I will say something. The show is about revenge against [Palpatine], correct? So let's say that if at some point we were going to see that character outside of [Maul's] head … I'm not sure I would be playing [him]."

Witwer is more than the voice of Maul; he also serves as a consulting producer on Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. That role lets him weigh in on story, character, and key creative choices across the series. “I'm happy to say that I had the opportunity to light the wick on it, because anything you do in Star Wars is a mass collaboration.”

That comment leaves the door open for Ian McDiarmid to voice Palpatine in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. McDiarmid has portrayed the Emperor in live-action for decades and has already voiced the character in Star Wars: The Bad Batch, Tales of the Jedi, and Star Wars: Rebels. He could appear in Season 2 or a later season if Palpatine steps out of Maul’s visions and into the story proper.

In Episode 8, Maul experiences visions of his brother Savage Opress as well as Emperor Palpatine. Because those moments played out inside Maul’s head, the production asked Witwer to handle the extra voices himself. Supervising director Brad Rau even told him to do his best Clancy Brown and his best Emperor.

Witwer confirmed that direction during the same FanX conversation. The creative team treated the hallucination as an opportunity rather than a limitation. That choice kept the sequence intimate while still nodding at the larger Star Wars mythos.

Revenge against Palpatine sits at the center of Maul’s arc in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. The first season follows the former Sith as he rebuilds power in the shadows after years of loss. Season 2 is expected to push that vendetta further once it arrives on Disney+.

Witwer has voiced Maul across multiple Star Wars projects for years. His consulting producer credit on this series gave him a chance to shape how those old wounds surface on screen. The collaboration with Brad Rau and the rest of the team remains a core part of the show’s identity.
