Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will explore the fraught dynamic between the cunning former Sith Lord Maul and the Twi'lek Jedi Padawan Devon Izara. Set in the chaotic aftermath of Order 66, the animated series follows Devon as she navigates survival alongside her Jedi Master while Maul attempts to draw her into his shadowy operations. The young Padawan, hiding with her master on the remote world of Janix, becomes the focal point of conflicting influences in a galaxy increasingly dominated by the Empire. This central relationship forms the emotional core of the story, highlighting themes of temptation, loyalty, and adaptation during one of the darkest periods in Star Wars history.
Insights from the show's creatives, shared in a GamesRadar feature, emphasize the deliberate design of this tug-of-war between Maul and Devon's Jedi Master, Eeko-Dio Daki, a Vurk Jedi Knight. The narrative positions Devon at the center of opposing forces, forcing her to confront difficult choices that test her Jedi training.
Shadow Lord writer Matt Michnovetz explained the team's intentions behind the new character:
We wanted to create a fresh and unique perspective and a new character that interacts with Maul in ways that we hadn't seen, who is challenged by a very difficult time period in the galaxy and forced to adapt and faced with these temptations. And, essentially, if you look at the character of Devon throughout the adventure, it's that she's got a devil on one side of her shoulder and then Daki on the other, basically. So, it gives her these temptations that she must make choices.
A prominent fan theory circulating online centers on Devon Izara's potential connection to Talon, the red-skinned Twi'lek Sith Lord from Star Wars Legends continuity. In those earlier stories, Talon was a powerful dark side user with documented associations to Maul, raising questions about whether Devon's arc could see her drawn deeper into the dark side and possibly evolve along similar lines. The theory draws from shared Twi'lek heritage, the era's moral ambiguities, and Maul's history of recruiting and mentoring Force-sensitive individuals for his own agendas.
Supervising director Brad Rau addressed the buzz surrounding these ideas while remaining guarded about specifics. "We can't give away too much. We have heard a lot of the fan theories and speculations, and we are fascinated by them. We'll just put it at that, leave it at that."
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord marks a significant expansion of Maul's storyline, picking up threads from his appearances in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels. Voiced once again by Sam Witwer, Maul continues his quest for power and revenge against those who wronged him, now operating through a rebuilt criminal syndicate in the Outer Rim. Devon, portrayed with a distinctive pink complexion and wielding a blue lightsaber, represents a new generation of Force users caught in the crossfire of larger galactic events.
The series promises to blend high-stakes action, intricate character development, and the moral gray areas that have defined Maul's journey since his dramatic return to canon. Animation from Lucasfilm Animation brings the shadowy underworlds and intense lightsaber confrontations to vivid life, offering longtime fans deeper insight into this pivotal era between the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Rebellion.
The series premieres on Disney+ on April 6, 2026, with two episodes available at launch. Subsequent episodes will drop two per week every Monday, building toward the season finale on May 4, 2026—Star Wars Day. This 10-episode first season will deliver a tightly paced narrative that ties directly into the broader Star Wars timeline, providing new context for Maul's enduring influence and the personal struggles of emerging Force wielders like Devon Izara. Fans can expect a compelling blend of established lore and innovative storytelling that keeps the franchise's legacy alive while introducing fresh perspectives on its most complex anti-hero.
