Anthony Carrigan, who pays the shape-shifting Metamorpho in James Gunn's upcoming Superman film, has teased the emotional core of James Gunn's upcoming Superman movie. While promoting his role in the drama film McVeigh, the 42-year-old actor hinted that this take of Superman will emphasize hope.

"I mean, honestly, the only thing I can say is just what a joy it was to work on a project like that," Carrigan told ComicBookMovie's Josh Wilding in a video. "I'm so excited to obviously bring something like McVeigh to audiences, but also something that inspires such hope and is really about something very uplifting."

Back in January, Carrigan talked about his personal connection to the role of Metamorpho, noting that the character's struggle with his appearance resonates with his own experience with alopecia.

“With Metamorpho, this is a character who was almost cursed with his powers and thought that he was freakish in terms of what he looked like and that’s something I could totally relate to because of my alopecia,” told Rolling Stone.

Metamorpho is someone who can transform his body into various elements. Although his role in Superman's story is still being kept under wraps, the prevailing theory is that he is being held captive by Lex Luthor.

James Gunn's Superman won't be a comedy

Carrigan's comment aligns with what Gunn said during an interview with GQ in 2023. He promised that his take on the Man of Steel won't be a comedy, explaining that it's easier for one to "take a character nobody knows, like the Guardians [of the Galaxy], or Peacemaker," and then do whatever they want with them, but fans from all over the world know the story of Superman. The director acknowledged drawing inspiration from Richard Donner’s classic movies starring Christopher Reeve.

“I’m definitely influenced by what Donner did with Superman, and what Christopher Reeve did with Superman, and Margot Kidder, who’s fantastic in the movie. She’s really the heart of it in a lot of ways,” Gunn said.
