Toho has released new footage for Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. The preview arrives after an earlier teaser already showed the creature pressing toward New York Harbor. Studio partners are lining the film up as both a continuation of the Shikishima story and a large-format autumn event.
The new official 1.43:1 trailer opens by confirming that Godzilla was never fully destroyed, then cuts into a fresh extermination campaign that mixes weather briefings, last-ditch planning, and city-level ruin. Late shots, a sudden shift in the sound design, and an unfamiliar roar imply that a potentially more powerful creature may already be circling the same battlefield.
Returning leads Ryûnosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe are back as former kamikaze pilot Kôichi Shikishima and his wife Noriko, carrying forward the household that anchored the first film among other familiar faces. The footage also brings several newcomers into the fight, including Jun Kunimura as Dr. Ogata, Kenji Mizuhashi in an undisclosed role, Masami Nagasawa as weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama, Kai Inowaki in another unannounced part, Kou Maehara as assistant Akira Hagiwara, and Eita Okuno in a still-secret role.
Cameras never left Japan for principal photography, and the finished picture is the first Japanese production to carry the Filmed for IMAX designation from the start rather than as a later conversion. The crew captured the movie on IMAX-certified digital cameras designed for high-definition recording, then calibrated image and sound so the finished frames would be tuned specifically for IMAX auditoriums instead of being resized after the fact.
What is Godzilla Minus Zero about?
Early footage suggests the sequel is more sci-fi heavy than Godzilla Minus One, trading some of the earlier film’s grounded minesweeping and rubble for floating debris, strange atmospheric work, and operations that feel closer to speculative engineering than to ordinary reconstruction. That shift widens the canvas without dropping the human cost that defined the first movie.
The story resumes in 1949, two years after the upheaval of Godzilla Minus One, and follows the Shikishima family as a new calamity slams into a country that has only just begun to claw back daily life. Ryunosuke Kamiki again plays Koichi Shikishima, the hero who once faced Godzilla’s terror, and Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Oishi, the partner who miraculously survived the first attack on Tokyo.
Godzilla Minus Zero is written and directed by the award-winning Japanese producer and filmmaker Takashi Yamazaki, the same director who made Godzilla Minus One. Yamazaki again oversees the visual effects, expanding the scale of destruction while keeping the human story inside an occupied 1949 Japan that has barely started to breathe after the last catastrophe.
Godzilla Minus Zero will make its world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26, with Yamazaki and members of the company expected for the screening and Q and A. Toho then opens the film in Japan on November 3, 2026, which falls on Godzilla Day, before GKIDS rolls it into North American theaters on November 6, 2026, three days after the domestic launch.
