A new addition to the Spider-Man Universe of Sony Pictures Entertainment is coming out soon with a powerhouse group of women weaving their own names in the franchise. The Madame Web movie is a standalone film which would introduce the titular hero who sees into the past and the future as she tries to save the present.
Madame Web is one of the highly anticipated releases for Sony Pictures Entertainment which will introduce one of the most unique heroes from Marvel Comics. A clairvoyant and precognitive woman will bind three soon-to-be heroes as she saves them from a villain that eyes to stop their becoming of a hero and with her abilities, she would do everything to tie it all with her web. Madame Web brings in the one that connects them all.
Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie with the release date, cast, plot, and more.
When is the release date of Madame Web?
The Spider-Man Universe of Sony Pictures Entertainment is not pumping its breaks with the inclusion of new heroes and villains into the franchise. In 2019, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that there would be a Madame Web movie which would be written by Matt Sazama, and Burk Sharpless. In 2020, SJ Clarkson joined in as the director and writer of the film, and later, Claire Parker got included as an additional writer to pen the script.
Madame Web has faced various push backs when it comes to its release date. At first, it was supposed to arrive earlier this year on July 7, 2023 but it was later moved to an October 6, 2023 release. It was pushed back to a much later date, on February 16, 2024, then a sudden change finally decided the fate of the release date of Madame Web. The recent SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes put the industry into a standstill, similar to that time when the pandemic put everything to a halt, but this time, it has the purpose for the betterment of the industry.
Madame Web got its final release schedule, should there be no other delays in the near future, coming out in theaters on February 14, 2024.
Who are the cast members of Madame Web?
Madame Web has a star-studded cast with Hollywood A-listers joining the band to bring the story to life. Dakota Johnson was the very first one to be linked to the project in January 2022 where she would be suiting up as the titular Madame Web or Cassandra Webb, a clairvoyant and precognitive mutant. Sydney Sweeney got involved in March 2022 and she is set to play Julia Carpenter, a.k.a. Spider-Woman II, and the successor of Madame Web in the comics. Both of them were confirmed in July 2023.
Joining the Madame Web cast are two other Spider-Man heroes, Mattie Franklin/ Spider-Woman III who will be played by Celeste O’Connor and Anya Corazon a.k.a. Spider-Girl who will be portrayed by Isabela Merced. The villain in Madame Web will be one who dons a similar suit to Spider-Man and he would be Ezekiel “Zeke” Sims, to be played by Tahar Rahim. Other cast members are Adam Scott as Uncle Ben, Emma Robers as Mary Parker, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet.
On December 12, two posters for Madame Web have been revealed, one featuring Dakota Johnson and the other one featuring her and other main cast members:
What is the plot of Madame Web?
The official synopsis of Madame Web is as follows:
"Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing's most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures...if they can all survive a deadly present.
From the official synopsis of the movie, Madame Web will be telling the story of Cassandra Webb who, like in the comics, is a clairvoyant woman who will be meeting with three other women who were put under the threat of a deadly present with the villain Ezekiel “Zeke” Sims. The synopsis of the movie also left a hint, “Meanwhile, in another universe…” which could connect Madame Web to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Madame Web has an ability called the "Web of Life and Death" which allows one to have access to any point in time or any reality in existence and if this would be in Madame Web, it could connect the Spider-Man Universe to the MCU.
In the comics, Madame Web is presented as an elderly woman who is paralyzed and blind with a disease known as myasthenia gravis making her connected to a life support, like a spider to a spiderweb. She is telepathic, clairvoyant, and precognitive.Throughout her life, she has been a mentor to Mattie Franklin a.k.a. Spider-Woman and before her death, she regained her sight and she passed her abilities to Julia Carpenter. While the comic book origins of Madame Web seems to be far from the movie adaptation since Cassandra Web in the film is quite young and she is a paramedic which means she isn’t some old woman attached to a life support.
Is there a trailer for Madame Web?
Yes! On November 15, 2023, Sony Pictures Entertainment released the first official trailer of Madame Web which reveals the first look at the movie. The trailer reveals Cassandra Webb who is going up against Ezekiel “Zeke” Sims who is plotting to stop the rise of three future Spider-Man heroes named Anya Corazon/Spider-Girl, Mattie Franklin/Spider-Woman III, and Julia Carpenter/Spider-Woman II. With her precognitive abilities, Cassandra does her best to keep them safe while she gets glimpses of her past and the connection of the villain to her own mother.
