A nearly nine-minute video showcasing gameplay from what appears to be Battlefield’s upcoming battle royale mode has surfaced online, offering a glimpse into its expansive map, destructible environments, and core mechanics. The footage, watermarked by Bilibili user Misaka_Mikoto_01, appears to stem from an early build, possibly tied to the recent Battlefield Labs test that began last week.
The opening of the video sets the stage for the player’s airdrop onto a sprawling battle royale map. Visual elements, such as buildings and other structures, can be seen popping in as the environment loads, suggesting the build is still in development. The footage highlights several gameplay features that align with Battlefield’s signature style, including dynamic environmental interactions. Notably, the player uses a sledgehammer to demolish bathroom walls, with each wall requiring approximately two swings to collapse entirely—a hallmark of Battlefield’s destructible environments. Other tools, such as grenades, ziplines, and a ladder gadget, are also showcased, emphasizing the mode’s focus on tactical versatility.
The leaked footage underscores the potential for Battlefield’s battle royale to carve out a unique space in a crowded genre. Unlike competitors such as Call of Duty: Warzone or Fortnite, which rely on toxic gas or a storm to shrink the playable area, this mode appears to incorporate a destructive fire-based ring, reminiscent of Battlefield V’s Firestorm mode. The use of ziplines and ladders further suggests a focus on verticality and mobility, allowing players to navigate the map in creative ways.
This past summer, publisher EA confirmed that a new battle royale mode is in development for the Battlefield series. The mode is being crafted by Ripple Effect, a studio under the Battlefield Studios banner, known for its work on Battlefield 2042’s Portal mode. This marks a renewed effort to bring the battle royale format to the franchise, following the mixed reception of Firestorm in 2018’s Battlefield V. Firestorm supported up to 64 players and featured a fiery ring to close the playable area, but it struggled to compete with genre giants like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Warzone, partly due to its requirement to purchase Battlefield V rather than being free-to-play.
Hints of Firestorm’s influence are evident in the leaked footage, particularly in the teaser’s depiction of a wave of destructive fire, suggesting this new mode may be a reimagined successor. While it remains unclear whether the battle royale will be integrated into Battlefield 6 or released as a standalone title, the footage has sparked anticipation for its potential to blend Battlefield’s large-scale chaos with battle royale’s survival-driven gameplay.
Battlefield 6 recently completed a successful open beta in August and is set to launch on October 10 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Further details about the battle royale mode’s official title and release structure are yet to be announced by Battlefield Studios.
