Kim Ji-won, Kim Woo-seok and Lee Jin-hee Share Laughs in Doctor X Making-of Video as Cast Rehearse Teddy Bear Surgery

A teddy bear gets the full surgical treatment in the new Doctor X making-of video, and Kim Ji-won, Kim Woo-seok and Lee Jin-hee can barely keep a straight face.

Kim Ji-won stays firmly in character as she explains how she will operate on a teddy bear, and the serious rehearsal quickly gives way to laughter in a new making-of video for the SBS medical noir Doctor X. The behind-the-scenes footage follows the cast as they rehearse one of the drama's most talked-about scenes, placing a child's teddy bear on the operating table with the same focus they would bring to a real surgery.

SBS Catch released the making-of video on its YouTube channel, showing the actors reciting their lines with straight faces before eventually bursting out laughing at the situation. Kim Woo-seok reacts to the bear mid-rehearsal and comments, "Isn't it so cute?" Kim Ji-won answers in character as Gye Su-jung, calmly explaining how she will operate on the bear by adding new stuffing.

The laughter continues between takes as the cast rehearse alongside child actress Lee Chae-yu, sharing warm moments that sit in sharp contrast to the tension of the episode itself. Kim Ji-won also shows playful chemistry with Lee Jin-hee, who struggles to hold in her laughter at her co-star's playful nature. The video's own description teases still more unseen moments, including a blooper in which Su-jung bumps her head and the cast's childish off-camera antics.

The scene at the centre of the video comes from Episode 8, in which emergency medicine professor Kim Seong-jin, played by Heo Jun-seok, asks Team Gye Su-jung to operate on the teddy bear of his patient Lee Hyun-ah. Lee Hyun-ah is an eight-year-old leukemia patient played by Lee Chae-yu, and the team — Gye Su-jung, Park Tae-gyeong and Jo Won-jin — place the bear on the operating table for the child's sake. The light moment carried real weight in the episode, after it emerged that Lee Hyun-ah's own health was so precarious that surgery for her would be difficult.

Doctor X is a medical noir based on the hit Japanese series of the same name, with Kim Ji-won as Gye Su-jung, a genius surgeon who proves what it means to be a doctor through pure skill alone. Dispatched to a corruption-ridden hospital, she operates on the establishment itself as much as on her patients, backed by a cast that includes Lee Jung-eun, Son Hyun-joo and Kim Woo-seok. The series is directed by Lee Jung-rim and written by Pyun Seong-geun.

The making-of arrives with the drama at its peak, after Episode 10 climbed to a nationwide rating of 17.7 percent and finished as the most-watched show of the entire week. That result continued a run that has kept Doctor X at No. 1 in its time slot for five straight weeks. The series now heads into its final week as the biggest Friday-Saturday drama on Korean television.
