In an interview with SFX Magazine, as reported by CinemaBlend, head writer Matt Michnovetz provided insight into the series' approach to Maul's character. The show, created by Dave Filoni and co-developed by Michnovetz, who also contributes to the writing, positions Maul in a morally ambiguous light rather than a straightforward heroic or purely villainous role.
"In terms of Maul being the villain? This is a bad guy fighting worse guys. We definitely did not want to make him a hero. He’s courageous, and he’s got his own code, but what we did was create a bunch of interesting new characters around him, so that his behavior and actions directly impact them," Michnovetz explained.
Set approximately one year after the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the rise of the Empire, the series primarily unfolds on the crime-ridden planet of Janix, a world largely untouched by Imperial influence. Maul, having survived his storied past—including being bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi, betrayed by his former master Darth Sidious, and enduring near-death during Order 66—now seeks to rebuild his criminal syndicate and potentially find a new apprentice. His path involves re-establishing underworld connections while pursuing vengeance against those who have wronged him over the years.
The narrative draws inspiration from classic action serials that influenced George Lucas's original Star Wars saga, framing it as the franchise's first true "cops and robbers" story within the animated realm. While Maul's ultimate fate is known from later appearances in Star Wars Rebels, the series introduces entirely new characters whose outcomes remain uncertain, heightening the stakes. Michnovetz emphasized that the series avoids sanitizing Maul's nature.
