Netflix has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look was at the top of its weekly chart after the half-hour Rockstar presentation used in-game PlayStation 5 footage to walk through Leonida, Vice City streets, and the early beats of Jason and Lucia’s story. The special ran more like a long-form preview than a conventional trailer and sat above films and series that usually occupy that slot. Netflix logged 31.1 million views for the title, making it the service’s most-watched program of the week.

The program ranked No. 1 in Netflix’s weekly Global Top 10 in the English-language film category by that designation in 87 of 93 regions. It finished well ahead of the runner-up title for the same period, the movie The Whisper Man. The geographic spread underscored how widely the preview traveled across the streamer’s tracked markets in a single reporting window.

Netflix measures each title from Monday through Sunday of the prior week and releases those figures every Tuesday. A view on the platform equals the total hours streamed of a title divided by that title’s running time, so repeated playback in the same household does not inflate the number the way a raw play count would. That methodology produces a different picture of reach than most video sites use.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. Eastern and reached Rockstar Games’ YouTube channel and other outlets six hours later. The official Rockstar upload on YouTube has 17 million views, but the video platform counts a view as soon as playback begins and does not divide hours watched by runtime. The staggered rollout gave the streamer a short exclusive window before the same footage circulated more widely.

Netflix described the collaboration with Rockstar Games as "a first-of-its-kind" offering for the service. After walking away from a planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, the company’s stock price fell sharply and leadership moved to lift engagement and total hours watched across the catalog. The GTA 6 preview sat inside that broader push to keep subscribers on the platform longer.

The special arrived as marketing for the game intensified in the final months before launch. Rockstar has kept additional gameplay footage limited while using the Netflix window to place a longer cut in front of a global subscriber base that already spends hours on the service each week. The presentation itself stayed focused on atmosphere, character, and the scale of the open world rather than a conventional trailer edit.
