GTA 6 Pre-Load Starts Next Week — Here's How to Be Ready on Day One

Rockstar moved the GTA 6 pre-load up to November 10 — here is the storage, the settings and the timing to sort out before it opens.

The biggest download of this console generation is nine days from playable, and Rockstar Games has pulled its start forward. Grand Theft Auto VI now pre-loads on Tuesday, November 10 — two days earlier than the date given when pre-orders opened — giving digital buyers a nine-day head start on one of the largest game files ever released.

That head start matters, because GTA 6 is not a download most connections will finish over a coffee. Here is everything confirmed about the pre-load, the storage it demands, and the settings worth checking before November 10 arrives.

GTA 6 Pre-Load Start Times on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S

The two consoles open the download differently. On PlayStation 5, pre-loading begins at midnight local time on November 10, so each time zone gets the files at its own midnight. On Xbox Series X|S, the pre-load opens at one moment worldwide — 12 AM GMT on November 10 — which lands at 7 PM ET on Monday, November 9 in the United States, or 4 PM PT on the West Coast.

Pre-loading is for digital pre-orders. Anyone who has bought GTA 6 through the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store can download the full game ahead of launch; the files simply stay locked until release.

How Much Space GTA 6 Needs — and Why to Clear More

Rockstar puts the pre-load at up to 212 GB of free space, depending on the device. The studio has not split the figure by console, so the safe move is to clear the full amount on whichever system you play on — roughly a third of a launch PS5's usable storage, and well over half of an Xbox Series S.

Clear a little beyond 212 GB if you can. Rockstar has not announced a day-one patch, and a launch-day update on top of a full drive is exactly the delay the pre-load exists to avoid.

Turn On Automatic Downloads Before November 10

The pre-load only starts by itself if your console is set up for it. On PS5, automatic downloads must be enabled, and the console needs to be powered on or sitting in Rest Mode when your midnight arrives. Xbox owners need the same combination: automatic updates on, and the console on or in Sleep mode at 7 PM ET on November 9.

A wired connection is worth the trouble for a file this size. If your console usually sits fully powered down, switch it to Rest Mode or Sleep on the night of November 9 and let the download run overnight.

How Long a 212 GB Download Actually Takes

Download times will decide who needs every one of those nine days. At 100 Mbps — a common cable connection — 212 GB takes roughly four and a half to five hours under perfect conditions. At 50 Mbps it stretches to about nine and a half hours, and at 25 Mbps you are looking at the better part of a full day, closer to 19 hours.

Real-world speeds dip below the number on your bill, especially on Wi-Fi in the evening. Starting on November 10 instead of launch week is the difference between a background task and a launch-day wait.

GTA 6 Physical Copies Are Codes in a Box

There is no disc version of GTA 6. The physical edition is a code in a box — the case holds a download code and nothing else — and those boxed copies reach retailers from November 12, two days after digital pre-loading opens.

That makes the boxed edition the slower route to a playable game, not a shortcut around the download. Boxed buyers still face the same 212 GB; they just start it later.

Which GTA 6 Edition to Pre-Order

The Standard Edition costs $79.99, and the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99, adding an upgrade pack with extra vehicles, weapons and outfits. The Ultimate Edition is sold through the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store.

Above both sits a $399.99 Collector's Edition from the Rockstar Store, stocked with Vice City goods including a 6-inch vinyl figure, Oakley sunglasses, a crossbody bag, a snapback cap and a magnetic mirror. Read the fine print before ordering: the Collector's Edition does not include a copy of the game itself.
