GTA 6 is Already a Pre-Sale Monster Weeks Before Launch

The pre-order total for GTA 6 is doing blockbuster launch numbers before the game even unlocks.

Most games would celebrate numbers like these after a full launch week. Grand Theft Auto VI is putting them up before a single copy can be played, with pre-orders still climbing as the release date closes in.

Analytics firm Sensor Tower estimates that GTA 6 has already generated more than $750 million in pre-sales as of November 3, from 7.71 million units sold across PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. The total breaks down to $751 million between the two platforms.

PlayStation 5 accounts for the bulk of it, with $559 million from 5.74 million units, a 74 percent share. Xbox Series consoles contributed $192 million from 1.97 million units, making up the remaining 26 percent. The pace is as striking as the total. In October, the game had already passed well over $600 million in pre-orders, and in roughly two weeks since, revenue climbed by more than $100 million on close to 1.3 million additional units.

The math underneath the total points somewhere interesting, too. At $751 million across 7.71 million units, the average pre-order is worth roughly $97, well above the $79.99 Standard Edition — a sign that a large share of buyers are going straight for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition rather than the base game.

Those are not normal pre-order numbers, and the context makes them stranger. Pre-sales usually spike in the final days before launch and still represent a fraction of a game's lifetime sales, yet GTA 6 has effectively banked a blockbuster's opening before its first copy unlocks.

The PlayStation skew tells its own story about where this launch will be won. Rockstar's audience has consolidated heavily on one console, which means the November conversation around the game will be shaped disproportionately by PS5 players, PS5 performance and PS5 footage.

Momentum should build further from here rather than flatten. Rockstar has set pre-load to begin on November 10, and the moment millions of players watch 212 GB land on their drives, the fence-sitters who were waiting tend to convert.

Whether pre-sales cross $1 billion before launch is now a live question rather than a fantasy. At the recent pace of more than $100 million per fortnight, the game would land just short on momentum alone, so it would take the expected pre-load and launch-week surge to push it over the line.

The timing gives the numbers an audience beyond players. Take-Two Interactive reports earnings on November 9, and a pre-sale curve like this one is exactly the kind of evidence the company can point to when investors ask what the most expensive game ever made is about to do.
