Rockstar Games is pushing Grand Theft Auto VI toward a more RPG-type style of gameplay, confirming that everyday actions like eating, exercising, and sleeping will meaningfully affect the two protagonists. These systems mark a deliberate evolution in how players interact with the open world and the characters who inhabit it.

As part of a cover story for Dazed magazine, Rockstar detailed how these lifestyle choices leave visible and lasting marks on Jason and Lucia. Eating influences their weight, working out builds and tones muscle, and going without sleep alters their facial features and overall appearance. It remains unclear whether a lack of sleep will affect actual gameplay or simply leave the characters looking sleep-deprived, yet the inclusion still underscores Rockstar’s attention to detail.

The approach echoes systems last seen in depth in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where Carl “CJ” Johnson’s body changed based on diet and fitness. Later entries scaled back those elements, though GTA 5 retained a simpler stat system for stamina and strength earned through physical activity. Players will have to take care of the Bonnie and Clyde-esque couple as GTA 6 appears set to restore and expand that level of personal consequence.

Players will also manage a social media feed inside the game and can switch freely between the couple, either operating together or splitting up to act independently. The relationship between Jason and Lucia forms a central focus, with choices carrying “repercussions that cut much deeper” than the honor systems of the Red Dead Redemption series.

Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, explained the studio’s mindset: “We look back at our previous games with a critical eye and see where we want to evolve based on what we didn’t do as well as we would have liked to, either because we didn’t have the time, resources or technological capabilities, or in some cases things we just didn’t do as well or consider as fully as we could have.” He added that the process remains highly iterative, noting, “A lot of what we do is very iterative — we adjust a lot of things by feel based on what is working and what isn’t.”

These body and lifestyle systems sit alongside a more reactive world in which NPCs respond believably to player actions, reinforcing the sense that every habit leaves a mark. It is possible the game will feature some kind of relationship meter that impacts how Jason and Lucia feel about each other. The result points to a denser, more personal form of immersion than the series has delivered in recent entries.

Recent leaks from Cyberleek have circulated extensive gameplay footage over the past week. Rockstar addressed those leaks with an official statement today, describing the situation as heartbreaking for the team while affirming its focus on delivering the finished product.
