As per the song featured in the GTA 6 trailer, Tom Petty's Love is a Long Road led the fans theorizing that its use has a deeper meaning for the game.
Music has always played a pivotal role when it comes to setting the vibe of a clip and at times, the use of certain songs mean more than just the lyrics and the melody that plays behind the background. GTA 6 broke the internet with its first trailer as it cut off the decade-long wait for what's next in the game series and it featured Love is a Long Road by Tom Petty as the glimmering view of a modern-day Vice City pans on the screen and the clip teases some details that one could look out for in the game. The use of the track, however, sparked some theories among curious fans of the game, believing that the song has a deeper connection to the narrative.
Is Tom Petty's Love is a Long Road hiding a deeper meaning for GTA 6?
On GTA Forums, a user named Johnny Albuquerque mentioned that the song of Tom Petty hides a deeper meaning on what the story of GTA 6 would be, “I think the lyrics of Tom Petty's song in the trailer could be a giveaway of some sorts. It's about a dangerous girl messing with a guy's (Tom's) head. Lucia might take Jason through the dark path and he ends up dying or just giving up on her.”
Looking at what the GTA 6 trailer has unveiled, as seen on the trailer above, the opening lines of Tom Petty's Love is a Long Road mentions, "There was a girl I knew, she said she cared about me, she tried to make my world, the way she thought it should be.” and with these lyrics, it seems to be pertaining to Lucia in the trailer who was first seen coming from prison and thereafter, being with Jason in the middle of a pursuit with the police.
On the same forum, user VercettiGuy supported the earlier claim by saying that the song could be put into the perspective of Jason in the narrative, "Don't know if that's been said before, but while the trailer highlights Lucia — the song playing, ‘Love is a Long Road’ by Tom Petty, could very well be from Jason's perspective. Petty at least sings it about a girl.”
Meanwhile, Tom Petty, himself, is song, Love is a Long Road, made it to one of the biggest game trailers to ever release in the entire history of gaming. However, the singer did not mention any connection between his song and GTA 6. Tom Petty is no stranger to Grand Theft Auto as he also provided the song Runnin' Down A Dream for GTA San Andreas which he gladly pointed out in a tweet.
Whether there is a connection between Tom Petty's Love is a Long Road and the story of GTA 6, there is surely a reason behind why the developers of the game chose the song to be the one playing over the first look at the game.
GTA 6 is slated for a 2025 launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
