The Gintama franchise celebrated its 20th anniversary with the Gintama Multiverse Festival, unveiling major announcements for the theatrical compilation film Gintama on Theater 2D: Yoshiwara in Flames, set to premiere in 2026 with a new teaser trailer and visual, and the new television anime 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei, slated for October 2025. These projects underscore the series’ lasting popularity, delivering its signature mix of humor, action, and emotional resonance to fans of Hideaki Sorachi’s iconic manga.

Gintama on Theater 2D: Yoshiwara in Flames Set for 2026

The Yoshiwara in Flames arc, one of Gintama’s most celebrated storylines, will take center stage in Gintama on Theater 2D: Yoshiwara in Flames, a compilation film scheduled for a theatrical release in 2026. This film follows previous Gintama on Theater 2D compilations, such as Baragaki-hen (November 2023), Ikkoku Keisei-hen (June 2024), and the upcoming Kintama-hen (November 22, 2024). The Yoshiwara in Flames arc is renowned for its intense action, emotional stakes, and comedic flair, making it a standout choice for a big-screen adaptation. The film will offer enhanced visuals and sound, providing fans an opportunity to relive this pivotal storyline in theaters for a limited engagement.

3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei Premieres October 2025

The Gintama Multiverse Festival also announced the television anime 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei, set to debut in October 2025. Adapted from Tomohito Ōsaki’s spin-off novel series, the anime takes place in the alternate universe of Gintama High School, with Ginpachi Sakata as an eccentric teacher guiding a class of familiar Gintama characters. Produced by Bandai Namco Pictures, the series is directed by Natsumi Higashida, with Makoto Moriwaki as chief director, Kazuyuki Fudeyasu and Mitei Mark II on series composition, Shinji Takeuchi as chief animation director, and Audio Highs composing the music.

The voice cast includes Tomokazu Sugita as Ginpachi Sakata, Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi Shimura, Rie Kugimiya as Kagura, Satsuki Yukino as Tae Shimura, Susumu Chiba as Isao Kondo, Kazuya Nakai as Toshiro Hijikata, Kenichi Suzumura as Sogo Okita, Tetsuharu Ohta as Sagaru Yamazaki, Yū Kobayashi as Ayame Sarutobi, Akira Ishida as Kotaro Katsura, Takehito Koyasu as Shinsuke Takasugi, and Satoshi Hino as Kamui. A teaser visual and promotional video were showcased at the festival, with a full trailer planned for Jump Festa 2025 on December 21, 2025. The 3-Nen Z-Gumi Ginpachi-Sensei novels, serialized from 2006 to 2018, previously inspired short animated segments, but this marks their first full television adaptation.

What is Gintama about?

Gintama, created by Hideaki Sorachi, is a science-fiction period-drama comedy serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2003 to 2018 and later in Jump Giga until 2019. With over 55 million manga copies sold, the franchise spans 367 anime episodes, three films, including Gintama THE VERY FINAL (2021), OVAs, live-action films, and net specials like Gintama The Semi-Final. Viz Media published the first 23 manga volumes in English.
