Epic Games has officially revived the companion feature that once delighted players years ago, transforming it into a fresh cosmetic system called Sidekicks for the upcoming The Simpsons-themed mini-season in Chapter 6.
The announcement ends months of speculation that began with leaks in May, followed by consistent teases across data mines and community discussions. Rather than delaying the launch until Chapter 7 in December, Epic is rolling out Sidekicks this weekend alongside the new Battle Pass—now accessible through an Xbox Game Pass subscription as well.
These reimagined pets go far beyond the static animal Back Blings of the past. Sidekicks are fully animated companions that trot alongside players in Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, and compatible creator-made experiences. They react in real time to the environment: celebrating victories, flinching from explosions, or even striking poses during emotes. The debut Sidekick, Peels, is a banana-clad canine inspired by the beloved Peely character, complete with expressive ears and a wagging tail that matches the fruit’s signature yellow hue.
Players can earn Peels directly through the Battle Pass, though Epic has not yet clarified if the pet is part of the free track or reserved for the Premium tier. Once equipped, most Sidekicks—including Peels—begin collecting Sidekick Points (SP) passively during matches. These points function as a dedicated progression currency, allowing owners to unlock an array of customizations such as alternate fur patterns, themed apparel, accessories, and color variants. Preview images reveal everything from tiny hoodies to glowing collars, ensuring each pet can evolve alongside its owner’s style.

Starting November 7, the Item Shop will expand the roster with Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor—three fan-favorite designs making the leap from Back Bling to fully interactive Sidekick. Additional concepts showcased include a Fishstick-inspired aquatic companion and an adorable pug sporting a zipped hoodie, hinting at a diverse lineup still in development. Epic also confirmed that future collaborations could leverage Sidekicks to introduce iconic characters in compact, pet-sized forms, opening new creative avenues for crossovers.
The broader implications stretch into Chapter 7 and beyond. Sources indicate Sidekicks will play an expanded role starting in December, potentially integrating with seasonal narratives, limited-time modes, and even larger collaborative events. This progression mechanic mirrors successful systems like the customizable Maya skin from Chapter 2 Season 2, but tailored specifically to companion cosmetics.
How to Get Sidekicks in Fortnite?
- Battle Pass: Progress through the Chapter 6 mini-season Battle Pass to claim Peels. Sidekick Points (SP) accumulate automatically while the pet is equipped, unlocking styles and accessories over time.
- Item Shop (November 7): Purchase Bonesy, Spike, and Lil’ Raptor individually or in bundles. Each paid Sidekick supports the same SP progression system.
- Future Releases: Look for Fishstick and pug variants in upcoming rotations, alongside teased feline options for cat lovers.
Sidekicks mark a nostalgic yet innovative return for Fortnite cosmetics, blending legacy designs with modern reactivity and personalization. The feature’s early arrival ensures players can bond with their new pals throughout the The Simpsons mini-season and carry them forward into the next chapter of Epic’s ever-evolving battle royale.
