The gaming community is still hyped after Rockstar Games released the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI — but Elon Musk is unlikely to purchase a copy when the game launches in 2025.
The Tesla CEO and the owner of X (formerly Twitter) said that he was not able to get into the massively successful Grand Theft Auto V, which has sold 190 million copies since 2015, because he "didn't like doing" virtual crime.
"Tried, but didn't like doing crime," Musk said on an X post responding to an X employee's post that they had never played GTA.
"GTA5 required shooting police officers in the opening scene. Just couldn't do it," he wrote.
Rockstar officially released the GTA 6 trailer on Monday, a day earlier than planned, minutes after a random user on X leaked the trailer with a crypto watermark. Rockstar acknowledged the leak on X, and posted the link to the video uploaded on its official YouTube channel.
The highly-anticipated game is set in Vice City, the fictionalized version of Miami in the state of Leonida (Florida), and it's the latest installment of Rockstar's popular Grand Theft Auto series, which is known for its story centered on organized crime, extreme violence, and other mature themes. The first trailer for GTA 6 revealed that its plot will center on the female protagonist named Lucia and her partner-in-crime, Jason.
Musk made it clear that he's not a fan of gratuitous violence, but he showed his passion for gaming when he streamed Diablo IV, an action role-playing dungeon crawling game with fantasy-themed violence.
GTA 6 trailer breaks YouTube record in 24 hours
In just 22 hours, the GTA 6 trailer racked up 85 million views on YouTube, breaking MrBeast's video record for most views in 24 hours. That ranking doesn't include music videos, but the hype around this highly-anticipated game is expected to smash more records. Currently, the most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours is the music video for the song Butter, performed by K-Pop group BTS, which was racked up 108 million views in that timespan.
You can watch the trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI below, and as you can see on YouTube, at the time of this writing, it has racked up 96 million views.
Grand Theft Auto VI is confirmed to release sometime in 2025 for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Unfortunately, Rockstar's press release didn't mention any plans to release GTA 6 for the PC at launch, but given the history of how Rockstar released previous games, it'll likely be released at at a later date.
