Netflix has spent the past year as the default stage for massive first-night events, and the platform has buckled under that pressure more than once. New Year’s Eve brought the series finale of Stranger Things, which immediately knocked the servers out, and that was the second time Stranger Things Season 5 had managed to crash the platform. Other live debuts produced the same result, including the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight and the Love Is Blind Live Reunion. Now Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look has arrived as the biggest Netflix debut of 2026, and the same result has occurred.
The presentation runs 27 minutes, and that length only sharpened the hunger for a longer official look at Rockstar’s next open-world game. A 3 p.m. ET start time had already been set for the first-look special, so the audience knew exactly when to open the app. Even with leaked footage circulating for days, it still looked as if a huge share of players hit Netflix at the same moment, and the service went down again.
The outage hit right as the premiere window opened, with error screens and failed loads spreading across phones, TVs, and browsers. Viewers immediately took that frustration to social media, posting screenshots of the “Something went wrong” message and tracking the spike on outage maps. Downdetector showed only a few dozen reports half an hour before 3 p.m., then jumped past 1,500 as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago lit up. The disruption did not last long, and the stream recovered within minutes, but the brief collapse made the scale of the rush obvious.
The special itself is built from in-game PlayStation 5 footage and follows Lucia and Jason through a botched pickup, apartment downtime, and longer stretches of driving and combat across Leonida. Missions can be played as either character, together or on separate paths, with a switch that lets one drive while the other leans out and shoots. The showcase also flags a wanted circle instead of individual cop blips, disguise options that can lower heat, and a pile of side activities from kayaks and fan boats to dirt-bike races, robberies, and parachuting.
Viewers who could not get through on Netflix will not have to wait much longer for another option. Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look is scheduled to go up on YouTube tonight, giving anyone locked out of the streaming app a free path to the same 27-minute special later this evening. That second drop also lands after the six-hour Netflix window, so the footage should remain available after the initial scramble fades. GTA 6 itself is still set for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
