In about a week, fans will finally see the revenge story of Mizu in the new Netflix animated series Blue Eye Samurai. To give fans a glimpse of an epic adventure they’re about to see, the streamer has released a new trailer, and this time, it reveals the real meaning of a sword.
The trailer begins with a peaceful 17th-century Edo-period Japan with the birds flying in the skies and people busy with their everyday lives. But behind this, a dark scenario is seen, with a mother and child left outside without a home, freezing in the cold. “What is a sword?” the narrator asks. “It’s a line.”
“On one side of the line is life,” it continues, as a montage of scenes featuring Mizu plays. “The other death,” it adds, while the arrowhead pierced through a bird’s body. From there, the preview shows how a sword is made while a woman gives birth to an evil. A man then says, “No man can defeat an army, but one creature can,” and shows Mizu in her disguise as a warrior going into a battle to take her revenge.
She’s then seen fighting a demon while praying for strength to find the men she’s looking for. Though she has no idea about their names, she’s sure of their fates in her hand. As she enters a pub and a man asks what she is, she unsheathes her sword, slashes the guy, and says, “I have a name,” while showing her blue eyes.

What is Blue Eye Samurai about?
Blue Eye Samurai tells the story of Mizu, who’s seeking revenge against four white men present during her birth. She swears to kill them all, even though one of them might be her father, whom she accuses of making her a “creature of shame.” But as revenge is not for women in 17th-century Japan, she hides her gender and blue eyes as she begins her story of vengeance.
