GTA 6 Extended Look Drove More Than 100,000 Netflix Sign-Ups in the US

Ampere ranks a six-hour GTA 6 window behind only Stranger Things and an MMA card this year.

Rockstar Games and Netflix partnered on Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look, a 26-minute presentation that premiered exclusively on the streaming service on August 27, 2026. Netflix’s own data had already shown the special was enormously popular with viewers after that debut. It has been reported that the 26-minute trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI drove more than 100,000 people to sign up to Netflix that day in the US alone.

According to Ampere Analysis, Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look ranked as the third-biggest Netflix event of 2026 for new subscriber sign-ups. Only the final season of Stranger Things and the Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano MMA fight generated larger acquisition spikes that year.

The same research found that a notable share of idle American accounts came back specifically for the premiere. More than 5 percent of US members who had not streamed anything on Netflix during the 30 days leading up to the drop returned and watched the special first, a reactivation rate that outpaced every series and film measured on the service in that window.

Ampere’s Louise Wooldridge said the brief exclusive window demonstrated how much demand a flagship game reveal can create. “More than 100,000 sign-ups from a six-hour exclusive window shows the pulling power of a major gaming event. For Netflix, it also offers a way to compete with YouTube for gamer attention and to bring lapsed viewers back to the platform. For Rockstar, Netflix opens GTA 6 up to audiences beyond the franchise’s traditional core,” Wooldridge said.

Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look delivered the deepest look yet at Rockstar’s upcoming game, mixing in-engine gameplay captured on PlayStation 5 with extended cutscenes. The footage followed couple-turned-partners Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos through a botched score in Leonida, a police raid, jobs for figures such as Raul Bautista, and a high-society security assignment that collapsed into another firefight. It also previewed dual-character switching, disguise and wanted-level systems, and open-world activities ranging from airboat runs and scuba dives to gym sessions, drag races, and store robberies.

The Ampere findings sit alongside Netflix’s viewership figures, which already established the special as a major draw after its timed exclusive window. Taken together, the sign-up spike and the unusually high return of dormant US accounts suggest the partnership did more than park a trailer on a streaming homepage. It turned a six-hour head start into measurable subscriber growth and a rare reactivation event in a year otherwise dominated by prestige television and live combat sports.
