Kakao Entertainment confirmed a substantial rise in engagement with the original A Bona Fide Killer webtoon after its live-action adaptation began airing on MBC. The company pointed to the drama’s early performance as a key factor driving renewed attention to the source material across its digital platforms.

Data released by Kakao Entertainment indicates that views on Kakao Page and Kakao Webtoon increased approximately tenfold when comparing the week of July 20–26, just before the premiere, with the August 3–9 period. The series first broadcast on July 31 and quickly began generating additional interest in the long-running webtoon.

The live-action version has attracted notice for its tightly choreographed action sequences and steady narrative momentum. Kakao Entertainment ran complementary promotional efforts for the original webtoon at the same time as the drama’s debut, helping channel new readers toward the earlier chapters and ongoing seasons.

A Bona Fide Killer follows Yoo Bo-na, a sales team manager and mother who returns from maternity leave only to resume her other identity as the elite assassin called Kingfisher. She continues eliminating violent criminals who have avoided legal consequences while maintaining her household routines. Her husband Kwon Tae-seong works as an investigative reporter and receives an assignment to cover the sudden reappearance of Kingfisher, creating mounting tension as personal and professional lines begin to overlap.

Yoon, the writer of the original webtoon of the same title, shared her reaction after viewing the adaptation. “I was amazed by the details in the drama that are identical to the original. I would like to thank the production team and actors for their efforts in bringing the original work to life as much as possible,” she said, adding that the care taken with specific character moments and settings stood out. “The part I looked forward to most in the video adaptation was Bona’s action scenes; I felt a thrill watching the dynamic scenes that are difficult to fully express through drawings.” He also remarked, “There will be fun in finding the differences between the original and the drama,” and continued, “As so many people have put their hard work into this drama, I would be incredibly grateful and happy as the original author if viewers watched and enjoyed the show even more.”

The MBC series stars Gong Hyo-jin in the dual role of Yoo Bo-na and Kingfisher, with Jung Joon-won portraying her husband Kwon Tae-seong and Lee Sang-yi appearing as a determined detective. Yoon Jong-ho directs the production, which draws directly from the Kakao Webtoon serialized by Yoon and Gum since the early 2020s.
